Interview with Machell Xiong

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: A project that I worked on and am especially proud of is the time my friends and I had a project for a competition. We all worked really hard, communicated well, persevered, and won third place. Even though it wasn't first place, I was extremely proud that we made it that far with no complications along the way.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment, I am working on my singing career through SoundBetter :)

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: At the moment, I do not know anyone on SoundBetter but I am always ready to have more friends and partners.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I prefer Analog clocks because they provide such a classy look to them.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise that I will always do well and that I will communicate with you well. Communication is very important between two or more people because no one wants to mess up.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I like that I am doing something that I love to do and that I am working with people who also love music.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: The most common question I get asked is, "can you sing this song for me?" and the answer is always yes!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that if I am paid to do something, I am going to give it my all. That is just not true because I like to give 200% when I do anything. I always give my all and more.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I always want to know what kind of vibe are they going for. You can turn any song into a jazzy song, a hip hop style, or even a sad and sorrowful song depending on the person who is singing.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: A piece of advice I would have to give is to always be kind. I think that kindness and respect will give a better production in the long run and there won't be any complications along the way.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: If I were on a desert island, I would bring a lighter, a sewing kit, a journal, a hair comb, and a pot.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My career path was actually to go to school, but I ended up disliking the health major I was in and decided to start doing something I really enjoy (like singing). I was in University for about a little over a year before I decided to quit.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style would be on the more upbeat and cutesy side even though I love to sing to more ballad-like songs.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: An artist I would like to work with would be Doja Cat. I really like the vibes her music gives off and I really like her fun personality. I would really love to learn more about the way she produces, writes, and performs her music as well.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: One music production tip I would say is that if it does not sound right, it does not hurt to retry again. When it comes to restarting a project, many users tend to feel scared or angry at the thought of restarting but I find that restarting on a fresh clean slate can help me understand why it may have sounded different.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on pop music but I can also work with every genre except heavy metal.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill would most likely be making sure that any of my clients had a wonderful time working with me as well as being satisfied with the finished and completed project that we worked on together.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I would like to imagine that I bring any song that I am singing a bounce of life. I hope that with my vocals, the songs I am singing can make the listener feel as though they are listening to their favorite song for the first time again.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I typically record in one go and start editing and chopping vocals from there. I also tend to re-record until everything sounds perfect.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I am using a Blue Yeti x USB mic to record on my laptop and to edit I am using Audacity.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I am really inspired by the wonderful pop artists of today as they write, produce, and perform their works of art. I hope to one day achieve that level of accomplishment.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I provide my clients with clear feminine vocals for their song of choice, instrumental, lyrics, and or style/genre that they want.
