Matthew Owen

Session Guitarist

Matthew Owen on SoundBetter

Session guitarist with 15+ years of studio experience, specializing in Rock, Americana, Country, Pop, and ambient/textural guitar parts. My goal is to create tasteful, commercial ready guitar parts that will serve your song.

I am an Ohio based session guitarist, specializing in Rock, Americana, Country, Pop, and ambient/textural guitar parts. I am most influenced by guitarists whose parts best serve the song, such as Mike Campbell of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. I have been playing for 20+ years, and have worked on countless studio/session projects over the last 15+ years.

I have a wide range of gear (guitars, amps, pedals, etc.) to accommodate the needs of your song. I am friendly and easy to work with and enjoy communicating back and forth to ensure you will be happy with the results!

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: I love the creativity that writing guitar parts requires, and I love using that creativity to help an artist bring their song to life

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: Gibson ES-335, Fender Telecaster, Matchless HC-30 amplifier, Strymon Flint reverb/tremolo, Strymon El Capistan tape delay

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: Rock, Country, Ambient, Pop, Americana, Folk

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: My strongest skill is writing tracks that have great tone and support a song, not overtake it.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: I bring creativity and an understanding of how guitar tracks can be layered to work together and ultimately support the song. I am obsessed with guitar tone, so you can be assured that the tracks you receive will have a strong emphasis put on a high quality guitar tone.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: I like to start by listening to the song with the direction I've received from the artist. As I listen, I start thinking about how I can layer in guitar parts where necessary. I'll then start playing along with the track a number of times before I work out my parts, and then I'll record until I get the right take for the track.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I have a professional home studio set up using and record into Logic using a Universal Audio Apollo interface.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I typically write and record guitar tracks for rock, pop, ambient, and Americana style songs.
