Chris Duggins on SoundBetter

I'm here to give you the umph and feel you need in your track. I promise no hassle and 100% satisfaction. Friendliness and professionalism is what I live by.

Hello! My name is Chris Duggins, and I'm here to play low notes on your song or record. I have a diverse set of instruments and tones for you to pick from, and my goal is to provide quality tracks AND options for all of my clients. Currently, I record using Logic Pro, a simple Focusrite 2i2 interface, and an LR Baggs Stadium DI for my projects. My favorite tones come from my vintage Gibson basses pulling through a '68 Bassman. I am happy to provide my final edit Entwistle/Palladino inspired tones, or to record completely clean tone so you can alter and adjust in any way, shape, or form.
I charge $100 per track. For each track I will provide 3 final takes. You will have the freedom to use one take or multiple. If for any reason the 3 final takes are not satisfactory, we will spend time discussing what you would prefer and I will provide 3 more final takes.
I am looking forward to the opportunity to provide some great feel on your track or tracks!

Interview with Chris Duggins

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I loved working on "Chasing Old Highs" with my buddy Ross Cooper. He is an amazing songwriter, but is humble in the creation of the sounds. He let me do what I felt worked, and really trusted me to make the parts right. Playing bass on that record was an amazing thing.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Learning a large set for an up and coming pop country artist out of Nashville!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I do not know anybody on SoundBetter.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Analog - it's more fun when it's hands on!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: If you don't like it, I will do it again!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love getting to create while being at home and seeing my kid grow up.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Do you mind not slapping? I never mind not slapping, don't worry. Are you able to play tastefully? Yes. Will your sound match my track? Yes. When will my track be back to me? Within a week.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Sure, you can play bass with a computer these days, but I do think there is a difference in feel and sound with the analog instrument.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Is there a particular song you'd like me to reference for tone? What kind of feel would you like the song to have? Who are your influences? What is the influence for this song? What is your turn around preference?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Don't be afraid to ask for a revision if you don't love it! I am here for you!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Les Paul bass, my upright, my 5 string banjo, an unnecessarily large bass amp, and a drum set just for fun.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I was gifted my first bass at 12 and began to teach myself by ear. I joined the jazz band in High School when I found out that I could avoid "real" class by doing so. At that point, I was playing in my church band with many of my musical mentors. When it came time to go to college, I applied to Belmont's music program and was accepted. Throughout the program I was involved in several recording and touring projects. I toured with Ross Cooper for just over 5 years before moving to Asheville, North Carolina.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Laid back, "cleans up nice," flannels, tattoos, and whiskey lover kinda guy.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I've always had a funny dream of playing for Paramore. Their energy is great, the bass carries fun lines, and the talent within the group is just colossal.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: If there is a resonance issue somewhere, always check the low tom tuning compared to the bass. It's a sneaky one.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Rock, country, americana, pop

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I never overplay unless I have to.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring what the song needs - not what I want to hear. I bring consistency to tracks; low end feel that is noticeable and filling but not overpowering.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My first step, beyond hearing my clients vision for the song or songs, is to listen to all of the songs at least 3 times before touching an instrument. From there, I jam with the songs 2-3 times, charting as I go the first time. My first take recording is always simple, and my second is more complicated. From there, I find what I like in both and smash it together!

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I run Logic Pro and have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface. Most of the time I run my Fender Bassman into a DI and call it a day. The DI has additional modeling capabilities, so I can get a range of tones without my amp as well. I have a small selection of microphones if that method of recording is preferred!

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: My influences come from far and wide - Mark Hoppus to Pino Palladino to Joe Dart to John Entwistle. I love to hear the energy they bring to their music and I love that they are forces within their field.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Typically I work face to face with clients in a studio environment. I love working in full band scenarios that give songs a really natural feel, but I also love finding a killer bass part for existing instrumentation. From finding good tone to getting the right line, I make sure my clients are happy with everything.
