Interview with Ash Bessy
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: For NIKKIETUTORIALS, I composed a piece of classical music - that’s something out of the ordinary for me! I aspired to create a modern and classical piece for her and had so much fun playing the keys in this one. Hope to see another challenge where I can bring out my versatility again!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: For an international sunglasses brand I created the soundtrack for their AD. Here I constantly switched between two moods: an old skool Bossa Nova song and a underground trap-hiphop track. The songs playfully intertwine, as I used the Bossa Nova sample in the hiphop song!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Nothing beats analogue for me! However, digital has made things so much easier and most importantly faster. It’s allowed for a quicker turnaround and review process.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I always come with 100% pure energy, originality, optimism and creativity and am flexible throughout the whole process. I maintain a no-nonsense approach. No excuses, no waiting, no sloppiness & always on time. I will make your vision come to life.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love music - making it, playing it and producing it. What’s so different about this job is that I get to create something new each time.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Professionally I’ve been in this industry for 5+ years, but I would say my involvement in music started from young. Coming from a musical family and culture, I’ve played instruments from a young age (piano, drums, bass) and have done so in all sorts of settings. I’m proud to say that myself, my family and my friends live and breathe music!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I’d describe my sound as soulful yet modern. I include some ‘grimey’-elements to them, which alludes to an ‘underground’ and ‘urbanesque’ feel. I am passionate about melodies, originality and depth.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with the great singers of today, such as SZA and Summer Walker.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Melody. My work is defined by a strong sense of melody and harmony, which many clients and artists appreciate.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring an in-depth musical aesthetic that lives across genres and times: from older samples to newer drums, to soulful harmonics and interesting sounds.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: We'll start with a conversation around your vision and look into examples/references that match your style. After I’ve gotten a clear idea on the project, I’ll create our original sounds/track to the best of my ability in my studio, and propose it to you. We will then revise the project until you're satisfied!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have got my own professional studio in Amsterdam, and use Ableton, Logic and Protools. Equipment includes KORG R3, Fender Rhodes, Mellowtron & more.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: So many! However, I have a special place in my heart for: Ryan Leslie, Timbaland and Jamie XX.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: It ranges between producing, mixing and mastering a full fledged track for an artist and composing the sound design for a short film / advertisement.
