Interview with Ant Rowe @ Long Reef Mixing
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. In recording I often use an analog tube preamp on vocals and acoustic guitars. It adds an amazing tone and warmth. I also have an analog compressor. However, digital is so time efficient and the tools these days such as EQ's and even analog emulations are amazing.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'm only happy when they're happy.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't be afraid to use multiple compressors on a track. It can really make a difference.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'm a great listener. This is an essential skill in my work. I need to understand my client's vision by listening to them and I need to use my ears to work on and deliver the final mix.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring clarity, depth and musicality. I endeavour to preserve as many of the dynamics found in the original recording if they suit the overall mix. If I hear something that might work, I'll always suggest it to my client and provide them a sample of what it could sound like.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is on the property where I live. It's a separate building specifically set up for recording and mixing. One corner of the room is sound treated for recording vocals and mic'd instruments. The other end is my desk. I record into Pro Tools. I have a small rack of analog and digital gear. I have a keyboard and guitar always ready for any moment of inspiration.
