Interview with Ruben Arthur
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Am I only delivering one final product? Of course not, if you aren't happy by my first draft, I'll rewrite and rerecord until it fits you!
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm very proud of my Song "Are U Ready". I produced, sang and written the lyrics on it. It makes me proud since I really just let my creativity flow and packed up multiple feels into this one song.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A lot of selfmade songs. I try to release one each month.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: If you need Mixing or Mastering for your EDM songs check out Bram Fidder. He delivers all the time.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital just for a money matter.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I won't stop with revision until your pleased with every detail.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love putting emotions into music, and see people respond to those emotions and feel along.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That singing isn't learnable.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your goal with the track? What did you think about when producing/writing it? Is there something that's going on in your life at the moment? I try to make the song as much YOU as possible.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Listen to the vocals first on soundcloud, Spotify etc. Look up your artist and make sure the vocal fits your interests. Because nobody is able to fake his voice.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, Shure SM7B, Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 gen 3, Nord Stage 3 and my Gretsch Guitar
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been in the music industry for 6 years. Over the years I've signed to many indie lables like: Future House Cloud, LoudKult, Chillplanet etc. My first self written, sung and produced song "Good Days" got supported by Tiesto & Timmy Trumpet.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is risking things, I often end up mixing stuff which nobody else would.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Martin Garrix, since he's the reason I've started to become interested in EDM and producing.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't overdo stuff keep it clean and simple.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly I work on EDM genres and Commercial Pop
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill are catchy melodies, in production as well as in singing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring catchy melodies and simple lyrics, which are sung with as much emotion as possible!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Typically I listen through an instrumental a few times, and start to freestyle a melody and lyrics over it. From the freestyle I end up taking the melody + the basic theme of the lyrics. Then I start filling in the gaps and work out the freestyled lyrics into a whole song. After everything is written I start recording multiple takes, so I end up with enough to comp a solid lead vocal and have more takes as doubs ready. After comping I apply vocal processing to make the vocals sit in the backing track well.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My Studio is based in my own Cellar, it has great sound isolation and both my microphones are easily accessable. I record into a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 3rd gen directly into FL Studio (since I don't have enough money for fancy analog gear :( ).
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Most inspiring artist are; Fred Again, Bruno Mars, Harry Stone
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly write Lyrics, try to keep them catchy and sing them with as much emotion involved as possible.
