Tom was a masterful collaborator on our sound design for a technology product debut video, blending music composition with vivid, layered soundscapes to set the tone of the scenery. His creative versatility is invaluable, fluent in a range of styles to hone the right sound for any project. And his professionalism, enthusiasm and courtesy make working together a joy.

I recently recruited Tom to score a concept trailer (Spearshaker) and was absolutely blown away by his commitment and professionalism in approaching the task, as well as his prodigious abilities with music and sound. He was extremely open and attentive to the ideas I presented him with, whilst also being able to participate in a meaningful, on-going dialogue about the needs of the project. The speed and intensity with which he worked, was truly remarkable...especially considering the depth and complexity of the work he presented me with - bringing an incredible and rich dimension to the piece.

Tom composed a fantastic piece of music for us for a film concept trailer about the Renaissance man Sir Francis Bacon. We threw a lot of ideas at him wondering how he was going to put all the disparate elements together as we wanted morse code, Gregorian chanting, modern beats and Tudor lute. The result was truly incredible, lifting what was a good piece of concept film into another dimension. Tom is incredibly intuitive & has a feel for what compliments the visuals but also the emotion and pace of the piece. He did an incredible job, has a unique gift and we would recommend him unreservedly.

Tom has a unique ability to craft soundscapes ranging from 1940s bras, 1980s synth and EDM. He’s a bit like time-traveling composer, effortlessly transitioning between different eras and genres, creating captivating melodies that drive you into the film. What sets Tom apart is his iterative and fun approach to music production. He meticulously places every note and beat, weaving stories and emotions into his compositions. Tom is more than a composer; he's a collaborator who understands the essence of your vision and transforms it into musical brilliance, making your films truly unforgettable.

Interview with Shy George Productions

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I promise that we will take your production to the next level. This is a collaboration and we will keep working until your project is exactly where it needs to be.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: Is the video portion of the film / project finished already? Do you have picture lock? Do you have a clear idea of what you looking for or are you open to ideas and interpretation? What is the turnaround time?

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I spent years DJing in London and Sydney and a natural progression was music production. I spent my time mostly producing house and techno music. As I also work as an actor and film maker I took a stab at marrying my two passions, music and film and embarked on the composer path. I've not looked back and have enjoyed composing scores for films, trailers and commercials.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: Mostly cinematic scores and sound tracks but my history tells a different story. My background is house and electronic music so sometimes that comes through in my work.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: Having worked in the film business on both sides of the camera I know what works when putting sound to video. I know how to enhance the story telling with the right soundtrack.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: Energy, emotion and passion.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: For films I would sit down with the client and thoroughly go through the video. Discuss cue points and the genre. What kind of emotions do we want to evoke in the audience? I would like to see the finished film without any sounds and have a copy with the timecode so we can go back and forth easily to make adjustments.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I work in Logic with Spitfire Audio, Universal Audio, Soundtoys, Native Instruments, Diva, Serum, Solid Stage Logic, Waves and more.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: Cinematic film scores, exciting and suspenseful trailers, original sound design and tailored unique soundscapes
