Interview with Roderick Woodruff
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I'm especially proud of is my upcoming album, They Will Sing. I served as the songwriter, lead vocalist, and creative director, collaborating with talented producers and musicians to build a cohesive body of work centered on storytelling. The project challenged me to grow as both an artist and a collaborator, and it reflects the same level of care I bring to every client project.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm finishing my second studio album, They Will Sing, while collaborating with artists on toplines, vocal production, and Melodyne editing. I'm always excited to take on projects that challenge me creatively.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: At the moment, I'm focused on providing my own services and collaborating directly with clients through SoundBetter.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. Today's tools offer incredible flexibility while allowing me to work efficiently with clients anywhere in the world.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'll treat your music with the same care and attention I'd give my own. You'll receive honest communication, professional work, and a product I'm proud to put my name behind.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping artists hear their songs become what they imagined. Watching a great idea become a finished record is incredibly rewarding.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "Will my vocals sound natural?" Absolutely. My goal is to preserve emotion while improving pitch and timing so listeners hear the performance—not the editing.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That Melodyne can fix everything. Great editing enhances a strong performance—it doesn't replace one.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's your vision for the song? Do you have reference tracks? What's your deadline? Are there any specific lyrics, melodies, or vocal styles you'd like me to preserve or avoid?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Listen to their previous work and make sure their style fits your vision. The best collaborations happen when there's clear communication and mutual trust.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop with Logic Pro Shure SM7B Audio interface Quality headphones MIDI keyboard
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I'm a singer-songwriter and Berklee College of Music graduate with a Master's in Songwriting. My background in both music and theatre shaped my approach to storytelling, and I've spent years writing, recording, performing, and collaborating with artists across multiple genres.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Emotional, melodic, cinematic, and rooted in modern R&B. I love music that tells stories while remaining accessible and memorable.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with Beyoncé because every project she releases pushes artistry, storytelling, and vocal performance to a higher level. I admire that commitment to excellence.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Never tune vocals before choosing the best takes. Great vocal editing starts with great vocal comping.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Primarily R&B, Pop, Soul, and Singer-Songwriter, with influences from gospel and cinematic music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Writing vocal melodies that feel natural, memorable, and emotionally authentic. On the technical side, my strongest skill is transparent Melodyne tuning that enhances a performance without sounding over-processed.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Strong melodies, emotional storytelling, and attention to detail. I believe the best songs are both memorable and honest, so I focus on creating music that connects with listeners while remaining commercially competitive.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Every project starts with a conversation about your vision, references, and goals. After receiving your files, I complete the first draft, deliver it for feedback, make revisions if needed, and ensure you're completely happy before final delivery.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work primarily in Logic Pro with a Shure SM7B, Melodyne Studio, Waves plugins, and Universal Audio plugins. My workflow is built around delivering clean, professional vocals and polished edits with fast turnaround times.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by artists who combine strong songwriting with distinctive sonic worlds, including Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, Solange, Daniel Caesar, and Janelle Monáe. I also admire producers like Jack Antonoff, D'Mile, and Ryan Tedder for their ability to serve the song first.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I help artists turn great ideas into release-ready songs through topline writing, vocal melody development, Melodyne vocal tuning, timing alignment, and vocal production. Whether a song needs a memorable hook or polished vocals, my goal is to elevate the record without losing its emotion.
