Song first! Then production. Love Max Martin - inescapably catchy melodies, mindlessly singable choruses, and production that perfectly supports the song.

Joshua is amazing to work with. He does great work with limited resources, he gave me a great price, and he's very nice and comfortable to talk to. You can tell he really cares about making something that touches people. It was just a wonderful experience all around and I will be working with him again in the future.

  14. Review by Mariami

Josh inspired a big creative revival for me when I began my recent project. We instantly clicked as creatives and he was quick to support me with all my projects, assisted me with vocal coaching on a record in the studio and has continued to be an incredible sounding board for me when I need creative advice/ song support. Josh is the MAN!

Interview with Joshua Carey

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I love "Made Me Believe" (see Audio Samples). Its lyrics are easy, has a beautiful melodic shape, and the chorus really hits home.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: 3 Pop acts, a Country single, and an Indie album (oh the things we do for friends haha).

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes!!! Tempo Stokes and Mickey Shiloh - both phenomenal vocalists. And Lukas Rimbach - goes above and beyond on mixes.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: It doesn't matter! Just write a good song.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: A big song.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Listening back to a great song.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: 1) What are you trying to do? (Kesha, Beyonce, Drake?) 2) Are you willing to count the cost - energy, time and money - it will take to make this an undeniably great record? 3) Are you flexible? Songs change and you have to be able to work well with other people when they do.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Focus on the song. Make it as good as it can possibly be, and then find a great producer, demo vocalist, and mix engineer who all can take it where it needs to go.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: It starts with a melody, and then ideally the song gets fully fleshed out before production even begins. That ensures that the song itself is strong and can stand alone on its own. But that doesn't always happen. Production should enhance a song; a song shouldn't have to rely on its production.

  19. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  20. A: That it's easy.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: Classical music > bands > hip-hop > pop over the course of 15 years.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Soaring melodies, and big - BIG - choruses.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Max Martin - inescapably catchy melodies and concepts that tug at your deepest heartstrings even though they may be completely shallow. One of the best ever.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: It's all about the song.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Pop, pop and pop. (And other things, too, but mostly pop.)

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Melodies, far and away.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Beautiful melodies, a sense for arrangement, and ears. I am melodic at heart but do have a background in Sound.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: Vocal project studio - Logic & Pro Tools.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: Lyricists! I'm amazed by anyone who can say something in a pretty way.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: Top line and melody writer; overall song arrangement, and production.

"Made Me Believe"

I was the writer in this production
