Alissa Oberst on SoundBetter

I am a pop vocalist specializing in dance, corporate, and cinematic styles.

Need a youthful and airy vocal for your track? I can bring your vision to life with years of live singing experience, now fine-tuned into studio work. Need background vocals but don’t know where to start with harmonies? I can find them and layer them into lush goodness to take your song to the next level.

I record with a professional home studio setup using an sE X1S mic, Cranborne Audio EC1 preamp, and an SSL 2+ interface.

I specialize in dance, pop and cinematic styles. If you are looking for a vocal tone like Taylor Swift or Ashe, let’s chat about how I can help!

If we decide that I’m the right fit for your project, you will fund the project and then you'll get a rough mix from me for your approval. One round of revisions is included if needed. Once you approve the job, I will send all tracks as dry 24bit 48k wav files, completely tuned.

Looking forward to hearing from you - click "contact" and let's get started!

Interview with Alissa Oberst

  1. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  2. A: "Can I feature you as an artist?" - That is something I am open to, depending on the song. "Can you add harmonies to this?" - YES! I love finding new layers to add to the dynamics.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Have at least one or two reference tracks for the kind of style and vibe you are looking for. That will allow me to really be able to get a feel for your vision for the project.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: First step is to learn about my client's project, listen to their worktape and references they have for the song. If we decide we're a good fit together, my client will fund the project, and I will record a "vibe check" to make sure I'm headed in the right direction. After that, I track all of the final parts, making sure each track is clean and tuned. After one last confirmation, my client will mark the project as completed, and I will send over the final delivery.

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: Billie Eilish and her unique tone and style, the way her and Finneas write and create their music always blows me away. I also love Ruelle's epically cinematic style!

  9. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  10. A: I recently sang on two songs that had very different vibes, for the same client. One was quite dark and moody, the other more bright and sweet. After they shared their work tape and references with with me, they gave me permission to interpret the styles how I saw fit. I dove deep into the persona of each song, and the client was over the moon with the results! It was so fun to work with both styles and surprise them a bit with how I changed my vocal approach for each.

  11. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  12. A: I just released an artist EP, so I am quite busy managing PR for that, and more upcoming releases. I am collaborating on several new songs with some crazy talented people from across the globe that I am super excited about as well!

  13. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  14. A: Yes! Kimera Morrell is a fantastic vocalist, BoomFox Productions is a one-stop-shop for songwriting, vocals and production, and Maria Requena is a gorgeous singer with an incredible clear and agile voice.

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: Digital! I certainly love and respect the analog world, and acknowledge that we wouldn't be anywhere without it. But digital is what opened the door for me to launch my music career, so I am rather biased.

  17. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  18. A: I promise to communicate clearly, check in with you regularly, and ask all the questions needed to ensure the best outcome for our journey together.

  19. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  20. A: Being able to be a part of bringing a client's vision to life! Together we can create something beautiful, and that's very rewarding.

  21. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  22. A: That I just sing the melody once and that's it - definitely not true! I take care to ensure I am on the same page as my client with a style check-in, then I re-track everything. I'll create various types of background vocals including harmonies and adlibs. Then everything gets edited and tuned so that they are ready to drop into the client's project!

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: My computer, mic, interface, headphones and a midi controller.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: Music was a huge part of my home growing up, so I spent my childhood and teen years singing with my family and church bands. A few years ago, I came full circle and realized that I wanted to make a real career out of my love for music. I started learning everything I could about recording and producing, and never looked back!

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: My style is generally carefree - which translates to a light, happy vibe on upbeat songs, and a cool, nonchalant vibe on moodier songs.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: I would absolutely love to work with Andrew Huang. He is out of this universe when it comes to music and vocal production, while always keeping it fun and quirky.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Always begin with the end in mind! It's so important to have a clear vision so that you can give yourself a solid roadmap.

  33. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  34. A: What is your intention for this project? What are your references and inspirations for the song? What is your timeline?

  35. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  36. A: Usually all kinds of pop, with influences from EDM to cinematic.

  37. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  38. A: One of my strongest skills is being able to find lush harmonies to layer into a song, bringing it to life and adding a lot of dynamics.

  39. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  40. A: My vocal tone is youthful, bringing a modern sound to the projects that I contribute to.

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: I use an sE X1S microphone into a Cranborne Audio Camden EC1 preamp, and an SSL2+ interface into my iMac. I track and edit my vocals in Logic Pro.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Normally a client will bring a work tape or demo to me with a topline that they would like me to sing. I track the lead vocals, add harmonies if desired, and make sure all vocal parts have doubles so clients can dial in the mix just right.
