Interview with Marcus Ramsay

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Be open to communication on the front end so we can get you the result you want :)

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: MacBook, hard drive, Audio Technica headphones, midi keyboard

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I started out playing piano and then gradually got into production. I've been making music for about 12 years now.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: I'm a musician first so I enjoy having melodies and chords. But the pocket of the song has to be right.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: Dua Lipa. I feel she understands song structure but isn't afraid to break rules.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Leaving space for the vocalists to shine.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I usually work on Hip-Hop and Pop. Artists like Hit-Boy's style and being able to switch to Dua Lipa productions.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Being able to understand the structure of songs how to arrange music around them.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I help bring life to an idea and expound on said idea.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: My work process involves studying what's going on in current music and understanding what works and what doesn't. Then implement my own style to create something that has differentiation.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I use Logic Pro X to create all of my sessions. Utilizing plug-ins like Omnisphere and Serum to help with sound design.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I grew up in the 00s era of music so Kanye, Timbaland and The Neptunes heavily influenced me as well as Ryan Leslie. But in the context of today's producers, I enjoy D'Mile a lot with his organic instrumentation. As well as Ian Kirkpatrick and how he's able to build a song over dope grooves.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: I produce most of the time. I have a conversation with my clients first to hear what their vision is and then try to create something around that. That way I'm not creating on my own terms but it truly is a collaborative effort.
