BEX (Rebecca Strong) on SoundBetter

Need a catchy hook? Seeking female vocals? Want some memorable lyrics or melody help? I'm a professional singer and songwriter with a master's degree from The Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and those are my specialties. I've written songs in any genre you can think of, from pop & R&B to hip-hop & country. Let's take your track to the next level!

So, you have a beat (and maybe some verses) — now all you need is a massive, catchy chorus with an unforgettable hook. Maybe you have an instrumental track but need help crafting some killer lyrics and melodies. Or maybe all the writing is done, and you just need some female vocals to polish it off. That's where I come in! I'm a professional singer and songwriter with a master's degree from The Boston Conservatory at Berklee College, and I've written songs in almost any genre you can think of, from R&B to country and electro-pop. In addition to writing for my own pop solo releases, I've written hip-hop hooks/choruses for Emmy-nominated rapper T.O.N.E.-z — songs that have garnered hundreds of thousands of listens on Spotify (and made it onto Spotify-curated editorial playlists!).

Whatever vibe you're going for, I'll make it my mission to write something that not only captures the mood and the message of the song, but also has a memorable melody and powerful lyrics to match.

I also have an at-home studio and conveniently, a live-in sound engineer (my fiance).

Interview with BEX (Rebecca Strong)

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I just signed several songs with a publishing company in Nashville that will be pitched to other artists, and am finishing up a new single called "Sensitive," which I'll be releasing in March of 2023.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Bryan Fennelly! He's produced, mixed, and mastered every single one of my tracks.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: Moody, contemplative, and bursting with emotion and attitude.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: Pop, R&B, country, and hip-hop

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: Lyric writing. I pride myself on making every word count, and I won't rest until every line brings meaning to the song. Sometimes an artist will ask me to help them tweak one line — and even changing just changing a single word can make a big difference.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: Lyrics that hit you in the feels and haunt your thoughts. Earworm melodies that stick with you for days.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: I usually start with a melody. I'll listen to a track and hum along with a voice recorder, following my instincts. Once I have a basic melodic structure I'll ask myself: "what's the mood or vibe this melody is giving me?" From there I might get a phrase or an image, which I can then work off to further develop the subject or message of the song. I usually try to start with getting the chorus nailed down first, and then work backward to build out the verses leading up to the chorus. The lyrics usually go through several rounds of revisions until I'm satisfied.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: Donna Missal, Daniel Caesar, Julia Michaels, JP Saxe, Parson James, Bishop Briggs, Kelsea Ballerini, Sam Fischer, Sinead Harnett, Maddie & Tae, Tori Kelly, Gabby Barrett, Lauren Alaina

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I use a Rode NT1-A mic, Universal Audio x8p, and Protools / Logic

  19. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  20. A: I wrote the hook for two songs for T.O.N.E-z, an Emmy-nominated rapper. He had heard my single off my first album and liked the bluesy sound. It was such a joy to bring his songs to life by writing original lyrics as well as recording vocals! I enjoyed the challenge of taking an existing song and finding a way to channel that mood and message while adding some of my own flair. I was proud when those songs ended up on Spotify editorial playlists, and getting thousands of plays on YouTube and Spotify.

  21. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  22. A: A blend of both! It depends on the project.

  23. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  24. A: We'll always stay true to YOUR vision — that's my top priority!

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I've been writing songs since I was about 10 years old. I started by writing original musicals in middle school, went on to write and perform pop songs in college, and then eventually went back to get my master's degree at The Boston Conservatory at Berklee. While there, I wrote my first full-length album, which I went on to record in Boston. Since then, a number of artists have commissioned me to write lyrics/melodies or contribute vocals to their songs.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Ryan Tedder — he's versatile enough to write for any genre!

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: Writing a hook (lyrics + melody), and singing
