Interview with Maxwell Riuto
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Take the time to clearly communicate your vision and goals from the start. A good producer or engineer is not just a technician—they’re a creative partner who helps bring your ideas to life. Look for someone who listens actively, provides constructive feedback, and maintains open communication throughout the project. Collaboration and trust are key to achieving the best results.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be? Roland System-8 synthesizer – for versatile sound creation Roland TR-8S drum machine – to keep the rhythm alive Universal Audio Apollo Twin audio interface – for top-quality recording and playback Ableton Live 12 – my go-to DAW for production and arrangement M-Audio BX8a monitors – essential for accurate mixing and monitoring With these, I could produce, record, and mix almost anything—even on a desert island!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been working with audio and video production since 2008, gaining extensive experience in editing, mixing, and producing music. For the past two years, I’ve been a producer and instructor at Aimec, the largest DJ and music production school in Latin America. Alongside teaching, I continue to develop my own projects and provide freelance production services, blending years of hands-on practice with ongoing learning.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style blends melodic and atmospheric elements with rich textures and dynamic rhythms. I focus on creating emotionally engaging music that combines the energy of electronic genres like melodic house and synthpop with the depth and storytelling of cinematic soundtracks. This fusion results in tracks that are both danceable and immersive, appealing to both the body and the mind.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with artists who communicate openly and understand that music production is not just a technical process but also an artistic journey. Collaborating with someone who values creativity and expression allows for a more inspiring and authentic outcome, where both the artist’s vision and the producer’s expertise come together seamlessly.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always focus on the arrangement and dynamics early in the production process. A well-structured track with clear rises and falls keeps the listener engaged and adds emotional impact. Don’t just layer sounds—think about how each element interacts over time to create movement and energy.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I currently work on my own project, which blends sounds from various genres including melodic house, melodic dubstep, synthpop, synthwave, and cinematic soundtrack styles. This diverse range allows me to explore rich melodies, atmospheric textures, and dynamic arrangements, which I also bring into my client work.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is musical arrangement and structure. I excel at organizing musical elements in a way that keeps the listener engaged from start to finish, ensuring smooth transitions and a compelling flow throughout the track. This skill allows me to bring clarity and emotion to every production, making songs that resonate deeply.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a unique blend of technical expertise and creative intuition to every song I work on. My experience in production, mixing, and sound design allows me to shape sounds that not only fit perfectly together but also evoke emotion and atmosphere. I focus on crafting clear, dynamic mixes with rich textures and immersive layers, ensuring the final track sounds polished, professional, and truly expressive—capturing the artist’s vision and connecting deeply with listeners.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process starts with a deep conversation to understand the client’s vision, style, and goals for the project. I then create a tailored plan that fits their needs, whether it’s full track production, mixing, or sound design. I usually begin by laying down core elements like drums and bass, then build melodies and atmospheres around them. Throughout the process, I keep close communication with the client, sharing progress updates and incorporating feedback. Once the track or mix is near completion, I focus on refining details, balancing levels, and adding final polish through mixing and mastering to ensure the highest quality.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is equipped with a powerful combination of hardware and software designed to deliver professional-quality music production and audio engineering. I use Roland System-1 and System-8 synthesizers, along with the Roland TR-8S drum machine, to craft rich, dynamic electronic sounds. My audio interface is the Universal Audio Apollo Twin, paired with M-Audio BX8a Audiophile monitors for precise monitoring and mixing. For DAWs, I work primarily with Ableton Live 12 and Logic Pro 11, complemented by top-tier plugins from Waves, FabFilter, iZotope, Arturia, and certified Roland Cloud instruments and effects. This setup allows me to seamlessly blend analog warmth with digital precision, creating immersive and polished productions tailored to each client’s vision.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I draw inspiration from a diverse range of artists and producers who excel in melodic and atmospheric electronic music. Rufus Du Sol, Ben Böhmer, RY X, and Madis influence my approach to crafting deep, emotive soundscapes. For production quality and innovation, I look up to Deadmau5 and Alok, while Hans Zimmer inspires my cinematic storytelling through music. These influences guide me to blend technical excellence with emotional depth, creating unique and impactful music for my clients.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my work involves producing original electronic music tracks, mixing and mastering songs, and creating custom sound designs tailored to the client’s vision. I specialize in genres like techno, tech house, melodic house, and ambient music. Additionally, I often help vocalists with editing and polishing their recordings to fit perfectly into the mix. Whether it’s a club-ready track, an atmospheric soundtrack, or a polished single, I focus on delivering high-quality, emotionally engaging music that meets professional standards and the client’s unique style.
