Thank you for doing a great job on my song Jacopo. It was a pleasure working with you

Interview with Jacopo Marelli

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The last album of my band, Skassapunka. I write two songs from the beginning, writing the lyrics, to the final result. I'm so proud of these songs. And about the whole project, obviously.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working on a new album with my ska punk band (bass, but also lyrics for a couple of song), and other projects. I've an upcoming single I recorded with an italian independent songwriter.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. Because I like the warm sound of a bass cabinet, but I love also the tones you can get with some plugins.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: Fender precision bass (any model!), Rotosound strings, a pick, an Ampeg. And London Calling by The Clash ;)

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I begin to study music and electric bass when I was in high school, when I was 16. I play in bands since I was 17. I've played may live shows and festivals, also sharing the stage with great bands like Bad Manners and Bad Religion.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Precise and effective

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Ska, Punk, Reggae, Rock and its derivates, Folk, Pop, Hip/hop and Rap.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Fingerstyle and picking, fantasy and precision on playing.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I always try to give a little more than a basic bassline, working hard on composition, pursuit of the right tone nd effects. I'm not a "Root-note-guy".

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: I begin to study the backing track, playing some ideas over it. Then I deal with the song author, and try to find the right solution for the song. Then I'll record it.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I've a Fender p bass, a Squier P bass and a Musician Sterling. I've also an acoustic bass by Eko Guitars (historical italian brand). I play through a Gallien-Krueger MB500 or a Darkglass Vintage Ultra pedal. I record bass with a Scarlett 2i2 by Focusrite and Logic Pro X, with some plugins (Ampeg, GK and Darkglass).

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I'm inspired by musicians like Duff Mckagan, most of all, and other rock and hard rock bass players, like Roger Waters, Jeff Ament, Flea and so on. I love ska, punk and reggae; so, my main influences are Paul Simonon (The Clash), Matt Freeman (Rancid), Roger Lima (Less Than Jake) and many others.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: I offer professional bassline composition and recording for your song. I've solid experience in studio recording: I've recorded 3 albums (for a ska punk band) and various singles (from ska punk to beat and rock n roll).
