Hey all, I'm Tara Rook aka Just Milk, an electronic music producer, beat maker, multi-instrumentalist, composer, DJ, and song writer based out of Portland, Maine. I specialize in producing electronic, trip hop, and ambient sounds using various synths, vocal loops, and Abelton.

My own project is called Just Milk and I recently released a self produced ambient album on November 11th, 2022. I am currently focusing on releasing more of my beats, dance and house music.

A little background: I played synths/keyboards in Belle Mare (NYC), both live and recorded for the album "Heaven Forget" and other singles which were recorded at Electric Studios and Studio G in New York City. I composed electronic music for the modern dance group "People Movers" and other performers in the NYC area. Since moving to Portland I have developed my own project, Just Milk, which is a sonic exploration in beats, ambient music, and DJing.

I'm always looking for new projects to work and be a part of! I can come up with tracks quickly and efficiently.

Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I have a background in healing modalities: energy work, bodywork, teaching meditation and yoga, this has become an integral part of my own music production and would like to work with customers who are seeking this as well for their music.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I grew up playing classical piano, jazz piano, the clarinet, and singing in choir. I have been producing my own beats for over ten years starting in college. I played synths and sang back up vocals for a dream pop band in NYC. I have dabble in composing longer works for dancers and short films. I started DJing about 4 years ago and it's amazing. I have dreams of continuing developing my sound and working on larger projects.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Chill but hype.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would like to work with female rappers, Tia Corine would be a dream.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a very chill, yet energetic, quality to my songs.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I loved producing my ambient album. I did everything from writing, recording, producing, and mastering. It was very conceptual and the intention is to listen to the album from start to finish as a healing modality.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently releasing a track a month through my project, Just Milk. I will be working on producing my next LP this summer and intending to release it next Spring 2024.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both- they have different uses and depend on what the goal or purpose of the project is.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to be as intentional and dedicated as possible.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Making people happy.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: Are you in school? A: No.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Synth, mic, interface, computer, speakers (cables included for everything).
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Take breaks.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electronic music beats and sounds.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my patience.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It takes me about 30min to get the body of a beat down and then it could take anywhere from another 30min to however long to finish a track. I usually start with a drum beat or a synth loop produced by me. Depending on what is needed the process could be longer or shorter.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio set up is simple. I use Ableton to record, produce, and mix tracks.
