Matt brought so much life to one of my tracks with his amazing Mixing and Mastering skills. I can't thank him enough. He understood exactly what I wanted and worked with me every step of the way. A true professional!
I have known Matt for a couple of years now. I tracked drums for him on multiple records and he is such a pleasure to work with. He has a lot of experience and is very creative. He puts great effort into getting everything dialed in and sounding great from the beginning. He is definitely one of my favorite engineers to work with and I highly recommend him for projects.
I came to Matt with the production of my record,, knowing his past experience with James Otto and Music Mafia(some of my favorite stuff) and he helped me knock my debut record out of the park. Matt is someone who is interested in making music that is timeless and you can always be proud of. He is outstanding with every piece of the process from the bare bones all the way down to the ending mix.
Not choosing to hire him would be a mistake. He cares about your music, he will listen to you and your goals for creation, and he is a one man team(produce/mix/engineer).
Matt is an extraordinary mixer and engineer. He goes above and beyond to not only deliver a quality product, but to invest his time and wisdom in each artist to ensure they are able to present their best self in their music. I am continually impressed and inspired by his work. I highly recommend his services for your project!
So glad to see Matt on Soundbetter!
He’s an elite talent, a stand up guy and we have shared innumerable musical adventures. I can’t say enough good things.
Get in touch with Matt! You can thank me later!
Interview with Matt Troja
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: As many as I can possibly think of. I want to fully understand the meaning and emotion of a song nearly as well as the writer if possible, in order to convey exactly that to the listener. I listen closely to lyrics, and I try to treat every moment of a production or mix with the intention of expressing and enhancing the intended emotion from moment to moment.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use a fully hybrid setup of digital and analog gear, utilizing the absolute best of both formats. A very small sample of gear highlights includes: Up-to-date Pro Tools HDX, Dynaudio BM15A monitors, JBL subwoofers, Yamaha NS-10s, Folcrom analog summing, Antelope Galaxy 32 AD/DA converters, Crane Song HEDD 192 AD/DA converters, Dramastic Audio Obsidian and Smart C1 buss compressors, EL8-X Distressors, Shadow Hills Mono Gama mic pres, Aurora Audio and API mic pres & EQs, (2) Octo and (2) Quad UAD cards, Melodyne, Izotope, etc. And an endless supply of all of the most current and widely used digital plugins. Please inquire if ya REALLY wanna know, but I've probably got it.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Best of both worlds. I mix in the computer and do external summing, then route everything through several key pieces of stellar analog gear. This still allows for quick and easy recalls, but imparts the warmth and superior sonics I've come to love from the gear.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Do your homework. Find the best professional you can afford and then communicate clearly. Ask questions. Make sure he or she is a good fit and has the answers you're looking for.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I graduated Berklee College of Music's Production & Engineering program in 1999 and have been engineering, producing and mixing full time ever since. I've worked in studios in New Orleans, Los Angeles, Prague, Boston, Cleveland, and for over 13 years in Nashville.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I serve the song and the artist.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Anyone talented and with something of value to say. I value talent over fame any day. I've worked for major labels, publishing companies, big names and shoestring budget indies, and I enjoy working with them all.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Absolutely everything. I'm in Nashville, so there's plenty of country, but also plenty of rock, pop, Americana, urban, jazz and blues as well. I enjoy every bit of it.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Listening to the artist and the song, and capturing their exact intention.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: All of the session players I work with inspire me, as well as most of the producers I've worked for. I feed off of the passion and energy of the artist, and love to surpass all their expectations. And I'm always inspired by a brilliantly written song.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily mix and produce. My mixes include optional mastering. For my productions I will often play and include guitar, bass, keys and programming services, and I always have my full team of world class A-list Nashville session players on hand just a phone call away.
