Interview with Leandro Bastos
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Besides recording vocals for a variety of projects, I'm also writing and producing music for sync licensing opportunities (Film, TV, commercials, gaming), so I'm starting a production company called Premier Music Production, which hopefully I will be able to share further details soon, as I build further my songs catalog.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: There was a time that analog was the only thing I would think of, but the digital World came in strong and honestly, brought the quality standards that I could not even imagine some years ago. The answer then has to be both!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q- How long do you take? A- 2-3 days in average. Q- If I have multiple projects, is it possible to get a discount? A- Absolutely.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: First, do a good research on possible candidates, their style and influences. Then keep an open dialogue and share the most you can about the project, the background on how it started and progress made until its current state, the vision, expectations, etc. Results will always be better doing it like this, because you are bringing in a whole other level of emotional context, and the artist must feel that connection to translate it into their performance in order to produce awesome music.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I will assume electricity and internet reached that Island somehow?😆 Definitely my Fender Stratocaster guitar, Neuman mic, Marshall amp, iMac (with Logic Pro installed 😉) and Focusrite interface. That would put me in business, recording my songs and for all artists in need out there 😎
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started really early, as I was that kid singing on the bus going to school everyday, got to be known as the "singer" in my local community 😅. About 12 I picked up the guitar, trying to play Beatles songs, but when I got my first electric guitar life would never be the same again. 😀 I got together with some friends that were into music too and we started a band. Soon after I started singing as well and never stopped. As life went by, many bands, songs, and changes in my life (marriage, kids, also moving from Brazil to Switzerland, and then to Germany), I realized music could not be just a hobby or a secondary thing in my life, I really needed to become a professional and pursue this career 100%, which is what finally did in 2018. Since then I built my own studio and started composing, recording, producing my songs or for my bands (I currently have 2, in Cologne and Düsseldorf); and ultimately for many other artists now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I am a versatile vocalist and with more and more experience gained every year, in every project, I could say I pretty much fit in many types of projects. But with that said, the hard rock/metal style is where my voice will probably shine best, as it's what I basically grew up listening to and what I identify myself as an artist the most.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: The versatility to bring the right tone and character to what a song needs. The topline creation comes also very easy and natural to me, which has been an important factor to getting repeat business too.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Very simply put, I bring passion and drive! I guess that's the result of doing what you truly love.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I run Logic Pro X on a iMac and for vocals I use the Neuman TLM 102 mic, Focusrite ISA one pre-amp, Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 as my interface. Yamaha HS7 are my monitors of choice. I have through the years also acquired a number of plugins that help me reach the sounds and vibe I need for a specific song as well (compressors, delays, reverbs, saturators, etc. from companies like Spitfire, SoundToys, Slate Digital, Native Instruments and many more...). As for instruments I own a Fender Stratocaster guitar, Ibanez guitar, Fender Jazz bass, Yamaha Acoustic guitar, Yamaha MM8 digital piano/synthesizer, AKAI MPK249 midi controller. In the area of pedals and effects are just too many to list 😀 (special mention though to the Kemper Profiler, as it gives me and just about any guitarist what we could ever need). And of course the professional acoustic treatment in the room, which brings pure and clean quality recordings to life and helps me produce with confidence that the mix will translate well in any audio system (phone, car, bluetooth speakers, etc.)
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I have been recording vocals for all types of projects, mainly hard rock and metal material, but even some jingles and other styles from time to time.
