Interview with NAOMI WILD
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: When writing for clients, I work best when i have a reference track. It will be much easier for me to get the style you want this way.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Songwriting, cutting final vocals and demos.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Disclosure, Odesza, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Sza, Pharrell, Timbaland
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been singing since I was about five years old with my dad who was signed to RCA. I started really pursuing music in college when i was about nineteen, dropped out and am now doing music full-time. in total, i'd say i've been songwriting for about four years.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: to always put my best work into every record.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: getting to work with so many talented artists and learning from them. also being able to see my personal progress.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My personal style lyrically has hints of hip hop, I like to say things i would normally in every day conversation- my opinion is it always sounds more natural that way. Melodically however, i like to be more electronic/alternative. With overall production, i like to mix hip hop with electronic elements.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First I'll play the track on repeat and voice note any initial melodies that come to mind (usually a chord progression and drums is easiest to get the initial idea) then I'll start with lyrics, usually verses first, then pre chorus, then hook. Once the writing process is done, I can record the lead vocal, then add a separate track for doubles etc/BV/harmony/ad libs.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I track my vocals using ableton live.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: my debut album
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Wrote and sang on "Higher Ground," single on ODESZA's GRAMMY nominated album, "A Moment Apart".
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that I will never stick to writing one genre of music.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I love to jump around between genres. Electronic influenced production is my favorite, but i also love alternative and more urban records as well. Anything from indiepop to hip hop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Lyricism and cadence. Also being extremely flexible lyrically depending on the vocal style and genre of the record.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like the element of surprise, I don't like being able to predict lyrics to a song. But i still like to convey messages that are relatable and catchy. I like a song that you can sing along to, but you don't know all the words just by listening once.
