Interview with Dustin Hill Music

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: There is a song that i produced and sang on for my good friend Rowlan called "Why" that has surpassed two million streams on Spotify. That song is special to me because it is the first song that i worked on that got to a million streams. It gave me hope that i could do it myself for my own music as well.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My personal music catalog and a few mixes for other artists.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes - Rowlan & Mickey Shiloh

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital because you can take it anywhere and still make radio ready records.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to anyone that i work with is that i will handle their songs with the same care that i handle my own and will not stop until they are happy with the final.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: That i can do what i love and help other artists in the process.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: People usually ask me how i got into music and i say that i started with the drums and grew from there.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That anyone can do it.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Who are their inspirations and what artists do they look up to sonically.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Make sure that who you hire really cares about the way your record sounds and that you are happy at the end of the day. If the person does not truly love music and making music with other people you will never get the results you need from them.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Computer, Microphone, & headphones are all i need to make quality songs.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been playing drums since the age of 6 and have done music ever since. I studied classical percussion and jazz drumset in school and have been making my own music since 12 or 13. I am now 21 and have amassed well over a million streams across all platforms.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is along the lines of russ/post malone.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Russ, Post Malone, G-Eazy, Mod Son, Jack Harlow, and all the talented underground artists on sound better.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Side chain the kick to the bass for a clean low end and use multiple EQs & Compression on vocals.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Usually Hip Hop, but i have worked on plenty of R&B/Pop songs.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Vocal editing and mixing.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Clean vocal mixing, Vocal & Instrumental effects, Mastering, and any other aspect the song may need.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Typically i listen to the song and make sure i know what sound the artist is going for and then do the first mix which is basically me doing what i would do to one of my own songs. I send the first version and work with the artist from there to get it exactly how the need it to sound.
