This boy produced and mastered two songs for me and remastered an old song of mine again, the quality is stunning. Although I had partly too quiet and not the best vocals the sound was finally on a fkn HIGH LEVEL. I think his equiptment is worth more than my crib. shesh keep going.

Interview with to_beatZ

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Its the combination, I'm not joining one side :) I love analog warmth, but also love digital precision. I often use both.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I will be very honest with you. If I think your mix is bad I will tell you and I will not master it. Thats the only thing. But if I receive a good mix, I will promise to make the best out of it.

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: Can you make my Mix as loud as the Song xy? Maybe I could, but this shouldn't be the main Goal. If I can and it sounds good, then I'll do it. I think its a bigger advantage to have a high quality master with 1 or 2 db less than a very loud master with distortion in it.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: A Master engineer can only be as good as the mix is. Often people think a master engineer can make a bad mix sound good. This is not the case. I can probably hide some problems in your mix, but this is not what mastering is about.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: I have a template with a few questions for this in Word Format which i will send you before Mastering. It's more about emotional aspects of your song, I want to know whats essential in your mix from your P. O. V.

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Do it! I'm not a professional grammy winning Mastering Engineer at the Moment, but everyone has to start one day :) I gained a lot of experience in different genres the last few years. I'm also a very technical guy and can learn fast (for example to master new genres).

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: My monitors (Focal trio 9be), SSL Fusion, Manley Massive Passive Mastering Version, Neumann U-87 and my UA Apollo x4.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I started with Songwriting and Rap in 2016. I learned the Production site of music all by myself step by step. I started with Garageband, iPad and a cheap mic + Audio Interface. 5 years later i have a whole Home Studio with a lot of gained knowledge from tutorials, books, conversations and last but not least... Try and error! Now I can master all tracks for the label Wildfang-Music in Switzerland.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Hard to answer. I don't got a special type, Im very adaptable. I'm very critical with my work, often more than the customer.

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: Doesn't matter, I just want to work on interesting Projects with interesting Artists. Doesn't matter if you are a pro oder not, I want to feel the Fire in a track!

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Leave enough Headroom for your Mastering Engineer, he will be very happy I promise :)

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: I'll never give up, i work till I reach Perfection. My goal is to make the customers happy with my work, and to reach this goal i set the bar very high.

  25. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  26. A: The Deep House-Artist and Labelowner i0anis discovered my skills to master and offered me to master Tracks for his Label Wildfang-Music.

  27. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  28. A: On my own complete self written, self produced and Mastered Rap album.

  29. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  30. A: I just love to work on music. I also appreciate the exchange with other artists. The best thing is you can be creative and help to build something which makes people happy.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mastering: Rap/ Hip-Hop/ Trap, Tech House & Deep House Beatbuilding & Producing: Rap/Hip Hop/Trap

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I try to get the Spirit of every Track i work on. I try to understand what the Track should transport. I'll pick up your vision and give it a polish to get the maximum out of it. Additionally, I give all of my Heart & Soul into it, because i love to work on Music and with other Artists.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: First, I will listen to the whole song and notice if there are any heavy problems in it. If there are any, I will tell the customer to fit it in the mix before Mastering. If the Mix is good, i look for elements to accentuate. I will establish a balanced Frequency Spectrum to make your Track sound good on different Sound Systems. In the End I will compress and Limit the Mix properly to receive a good Loudness, which I can specialize for CD or Streaming ( - 9 LUFS and - 14 LUFS).

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I use Ableton Live 10 to work. I've got an apollo x4 Interface with a lot of High Quality UAD plug ins like the Fairchild 660 Compressor, Oxide Tape, Manley Variable MU and many many more. I've got 2 Monitoring Systems: The Focal clear Professional Headphones and 2x Focal trio 9be. I own some footswitches to switch from a three-way monitor to a two-way monitor. This helps to receive a robust Master on different sound systems. For analog Processing i use the Manley Massive Passive Mastering Version and the SSL Fusion analog Stereo Processor. This combination generates a punchy, crystal clear Sound. For a balanced Frequency Spectrum i use the FabFilter package a lot, especially the FabFilter Multiband Compressor and the Q3. My Computer meets the highest Quality requirements for music Production. I can oversample a Master up to 32 times without having any trouble with my CPU.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Eminem, Cr7z, OZ, Kollegah, Shindy, Dr. Dre, Scott Storch, Hans Zimmer, Kingsize

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Mastering. This means not only to make the track louder, I also will look for elements in your song to accentuate. I'll also establish a balanced Frequency Spectrum to make your track robust on different Sound Systems. I can conceal some problems in a mix, but I can't make a bad mix sound good. Therefore I will tell you before the Mastering Process if your Mix is worth to Master.
