Mixing & Mastering

James Rand on SoundBetter

My name is James and I mix records at Belly of the Beast studios in SE London. I love great songs with club sonics and I’ve mixed music for Sega Bodega, Shygirl, Beatrice Dillon and Mykki Blanco and for labels like Capitol US, Domino, Transgressive and Sony UK.

The role of a Mixing engineer varies from project to project and from artist to producer. I’ve been lucky to work with some incredible talent but most have differing expectations and it’s important for me to ascertain what the client wants exactly before we begin.

Your rough mix might be a 99.9% version of how you want it to be and you may just want some more detail and care across your vocal or on the other hand, maybe you want enhance some of your synth sounds or tune your vocals or drums and have somebody across the whole thing. Whichever the situation, the first job is mainly listening to you and your music as much as possible to figure out a strategy.

I utilise a hybrid mix of digital workflow with analogue processing and can work in Logic or Pro Tools depending on what makes most sense. The goal is get the music to sing wherever it needs to live, be it the club system, the kitchen radio or the Argos Bluetooth speaker.

I offer predominantly online mixing and mastering but also love meeting hands on people and having them down to my space in 2 minutes from Forest Hill station. Let’s finish your tunes!

Tell me about your project and how I can help, through the 'Contact' button above.
