I was recommended Soundmint by a friend who suggested I use them to help me with my demo. I could not have envisaged how amazing the end product would turn out. The service was professional and the quality was unreal. I shall be using Soundmint on all of my future projects and cannot recommend them enough.

Interview with Steve Carr

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I started pro audio 20 years ago working in live sound along side writing, performing and producing as an artist. 20 years on and its been a brilliant career, ive travelled the world doing what I love and have worked with and learned from too many talented people to mention.

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: Dynamic, tight and uplifting

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: I would love to work with Tame Impala. Kevins production skills are unique and he has the ability to carry his sound from the studio across in to the live domain brilliantly. He's ultimately a drummer but his understanding of how to put together a commercial yet original sounding track is scary good.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Side chaining is one of my most useful tips. I use side chain dynamics to help instruments with similar frequency ranges to sit together nicely in an automatic way giving your mix more headroom overall. Oh yes and space! Less is more, space in a track can be as powerful as a lead line.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: I work on all sorts of music, one week I'll be mixing an orchestra, another EDM. Most recently ive been specialising in working with live drummers.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: I can mix any genre of music

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I like to think I bring emotion and dynamic to a song and a tight low and sub end. I bring experience on how a mix should sound on a multitude of different systems like big PA's down to bluetooth speakers. I have regular access to big PA systems so always check my mixes back though these.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: I listen first. I listen to a track in a few different scenarios and on a few different systems to get a feel for the journey of the song. Then I brain storm on a note pad and make notes of how the song should travel. Depending on the genre but most often I start with the low end, what I call the foundation then build up from there. If it's a vocal heavy track I may start there. I build my mix in mono and once its framed I start to introduce pan and build the space in. I take regular breaks and listen regularly on different playback systems.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I have a 4 system monitoring set up using very high end German montiors by MusikElectronic along with larger far field monitors by KRK, mid fields by Genelec and a mono Avantone speaker. My room is treated to a high standard. I have a varied range of headphones to reference mixes through also. I mix mostly in the box but sum through analogue SSL preamps. I have an extensive plugin suite featuring WAVES and SSL native. I use Logic proX.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: I'm inspired by great mix engineers like Cenzo Townshend and Craig Silvey. Kevin Parker of Tame Impala is a big production inspiration for me right now.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Live sound mixing and recording along with mixes for broadcast and streaming. I'm now expanding in to remote studio mixing and producing.
