Interview with Jacob Kattan

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The current project I am doing is making me extremely proud so far.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Working on artist DsMooVe's upcoming debut album.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Analog is the trusty grandad with a newspaper, Digital is like that one futuristic movie with all the gadgets and buttons. Digital is the future.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I promise to do my best and make sure you got what you're looking for exactly.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Most people don't realize there is a creative aspect to being an engineer, throwing in some magic tricks here and there on a track.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: "Should I redo this? How did that sound?" I will truthfully tell you how I feel and how it sounds.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: Every artist and client has their own sound, of course. But when a skilled engineer like me starts working and mixing and editing, that doesn't mean that's the final product! There is a lot of work to go into a track on top of the rough edits or mixes on the surface.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I usually like to get an idea of your skill level and proficiency with being a musician or artist. I'm pretty patient in dealing with artists who don't have very much experience.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Be confident in your selections and choices. Never forget, supporting small is just as important, compared to overpaying someone for some potentially mediocre work, you can rely on someone small and local like me to give my work complete 100% undivided attention.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Speakers, headphones, computer, software, and more speakers. Sound is everything!

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I've been audio engineering for a little over 7 years now, while also going to Full Sail University in Orlando. I've always known this is exactly who I am and exactly what I want to do.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Crisp, Clean, Clear

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Pharrell Williams, Missy Elliot and Pusha T because they are all from my area and they are all industry moguls.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: Hip-Hop, Rap, even some Acoustic Singer/Songwriter and Reggae production

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: I am quick with ProTools. Shortcuts = Efficient and timely work

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I bring everything you want to hear, and make you hear things you never thought you could.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: Everybody has their formula, mine happens to be the one that makes a difference.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: Currently only working with ProTools of course and Sony Magnolia HeadPhones. Working on getting some studio speakers for personal use.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: The reason artists like ScHoolboy Q, Rick Ross, Nipsey Hussle, and Lil Uzi Vert have such a great sound is from their raw talent and their Engineers as well! Their songs are industry quality, and culture altering.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: I Mix and Edit sessions on the spot, to the most of my abilities, or to the desire of the client.
