Randy Charlson

Mixing Engineer, Producer

Randy Charlson on SoundBetter

Hello, my name is Randy Charlson. I am passionate about making, recording, mixing, producing, and listening to MUSIC. My full-time job is playing Guitar, but I LOVE to be on the other side of the glass as much as I can. I've been at it already for the last 5 years and I love it more everyday. If you want to know anything else about me, just asked!

I am a mixing engineer and producer. I have a overdub studio in San Diego, but since I travel so much I also have a mobile rig that is just as great and yields equally great results.

Interview with Randy Charlson

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Valley Of Vision- Self Titled EP Producer/Engineer/Editing/Drum Programming/Guitar/Keys/Synths/Mixing This project stretched me a lot, but I learned a ton about seeing the project as a whole.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Writing for my bands new record. Mixing some live tracks from our recent shows.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I am new to this site, so not yet. But I hope to meet people on here soon!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I use both. I am on the road a lot, so I'll use more digital on a day to day basis. If it sounds good...end of story. The consumer isn't going to care if you used Analog or Digital, they just want to LISTEN.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will try my hardest to accomplish YOUR goals, not mine. The song is YOURS...not mine.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: That I get to work on other peoples art and make it as best as it can be.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Will you tune my vocals and edit my drums. YES!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: "The mixer fixes my bad recordings." Don't depend on someone else to produce something great sounding. Take time and energy to make it how you want it to sound on your end as best as you can BEFORE you send it off to me.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Where do you see the song going? What is this song trying to communicate? What are your influences?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Give me a chance! I'd even mix a song for free before you hire me just to let you know that I'm the guy for the job!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Macbook Pro, UA Apollo twin, SM57, Fender Telecaster, Beyer dynamic 770 Headphones

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Im a fulltime musician right now. Ive been doing it for 4 years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Reactive and musical

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Colony House...the are such an amazing band. They have so much talent, energy, and INCREDIBLE songs!

  30. A: Don't be afraid to try something risky, trust your instincts.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Rock/CCM/Pop

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Being in tune with what the song is already doing, and come along side of that to make it shine.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Whatever the song calls for and whatever it takes to get it to where it needs to be.
