Interview with Serhan Solcum
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Production, mixing and vocal tuning.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Layering sounds is one of the most important things in production. As you layer sounds, you can design them as stereo width, envelope, frequency. If the sound is too wide, consider adding a mono layer to focus the mids. You can add layers to your bass drum and make it sound clicky or punch. Weakly heard frequency ranges (Low, mids, highs or sub) on the tracks can be supported with layers.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been working professionally in the music industry since 2000. I started as a guitar player with various bands. Since getting my degree in Music Technology in 2007 I've been working as a live sound engineer, mixer and music producer. Since 2019 I've been releasing music and sample packs under my artist name "Agawe"
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: If I think it's a well-produced song, I put aside all my exposed creative approach to bringing out what's required.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I want a rough-mix and a reference song to guide me so that I can design the balance and used special effects you imagine in a similar way. I import the channels into the project and check them all. After establishing a balance that makes all channels roughly audible, I make decisions based on compressor, eq and panorama ideas until I have a good version. By making automation and pitch-correction, I ensure that the vocal or lead instruments with the main theme are heard more clearly and on the correct pitch. I check that kick and percussion instruments resonate at the correct pitches, if not, I tune and place them in the right place. After listening on different sound systems and believing that the song is as finished and ready as possible, I send you a version.
