Hi,
My name is Vinay, a live sessions drummer based in Chennai, India. With over a decade of playing experience, I’ve performed with a variety of bands and artists (some of them include Swarathma, When Chai Met Toast, Shakthisree Gopalan,MS Krsna & Jyotsna Radhakrishnan) across the country.

The pandemic was harsh for all musicians. However, during that time, I was fortunate to make the switch from a live gigging drummer to a remote sessions drummer. More specifically, a remote sessions MIDI Drummer. For over 3 years, I've been recording MIDI drums for bands, solo artists, and producers worldwide. And now, I feel that it is time to offer my services to you as a recording MIDI drummer.

We all know the advantages of MIDI these days. Combined with a “Drummer’s Touch” and a wide collection of VSTs, I will focus on delivering the best performance for your song while emphasising on groove and feel.

I’m primarily a rock drummer but fairly comfortable with most genres like alternative, indie, blues, country, funk, r&b, singer-songwriter & more. In terms of deliverables, I can provide the MIDI file, individual drum stems (wav) or both.

I’d love to hear about your project. Click the “Contact” button above to get in touch and let's make some great songs together.

Interview with Vinay Ramakrishnan

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: That I get to be a part of someone's musical journey. Having to work with many musicians/artists all over the globe. Just to name a couple....

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I've been playing drums professionally across the country (India) for over a decade. Although I still play live gigs, the switch to MIDI Drumming happened during the pandemic. So that's about 2 years.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: The dream would be to work with country icons like Blake Shelton or Luke Graham. I love their styles of music and especially love how the drums sound in their songs. Another artist I would like to work with is Daughtry. I really liked his latest album.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Guitars - Josh Mark Raj and Matt Bacon. I've worked with both of them separately in multiple live settings and I know they're masters in the studio. Female Vocals - Suvi. She's an incredible singer.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Primarily rock, singer-songwriter and country. But I'm fairly comfortable with a wide variety genres. For a much clearer idea, please check out the YouTube video link I've placed above in my profile.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: Before we start, there are a couple of things I would require from you: 1) Of course, the song - I would require the song both with AND without reference drums. By reference drums, I mean drums that you may have programmed while making the track. This would help me get an idea on the general "vibe" of the song, and also help me understand if you are looking for any specific accenting. And without drums, so that I can record over the song for you. 2) Reference links or tracks (youtube/spotify/apple music) to help produce the best output for your song. Something for me to better understand the sound and style of playing that you are looking for. 3) Is your song recorded to a click track/metronome? Please share bpm information (including time signatures changes). If your song has multiple bpm and/or time signature changes, please add a note of the same with timestamps. 4) File requirement - MIDI Only (or) Drum Stems in wav format (or) both. Sample rate and bit rate information. 5) This one is not mandatory but it would help - Song Structure chart with lyrics (verse 1, chorus, bridge, solo etc.) Once I have these files, I would then come up with a couple of options for your review. Usually, I'd share the first draft within 48hours. And then make changes as per feedback and discussion. Once we have the approved drum track, that's when I would close the order and deliver the required files.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I trigger the MIDI through my Roland TD11KV V-Kit. My DAW is Logic Pro X (ver 10.7.6) and I have a wide variety of drum-based VSTs like Addictive Drums2, a whole bunch of packs from EZDrummer2/3, Superior Drummer 3 (core and Metal Machinery packs), a wide range of GetGoodDrums libraries, Abbey Road Drummer Collection, Butch Vig Drums & Studio Drummer from NI and finally a couple of packs from Mixwave

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I gravitate towards the playing of drummers like Benny Greb, Carter Beauford, Steve Jordan and Pat Torpey. In terms of production - Ash Soan, Dylan Wissing and Paul Mabury

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: Primarily, independent Singles. At times, they get converted to me working on the artist's/band's EP or Album.
