KMN Audio on SoundBetter

I’m a music production teacher and house music oriented mixing and mastering engineer who has mixed/mastered music on labels such as Repopulate Mars, Solid Grooves, Armada, Off The Grid, Solotoko, Anjunadeep and more. I have taught over 100 students in a personal and academic setting, teaching at EMS in Berlin for over two years.

I’ve been working as an engineer for around a decade, and I’ve had the opportunity with some amazing artists and record labels in electronic music. My mixes/masters range in variety from clean, punchy, and aggressive, to warm, dynamic and easy on the ears. Different styles of house music demand different approaches, and flexibility is an essential skill in the mastering engineer's toolkit.

I incorporate a relatively unique method into my way of working. If you send me a track to mix / master I can give you creative and mixing feedback before I start working on my end. This is my approach to making your track sound as good as possible.

Most engineers will simply accept the job offer and attempt to deal with problems on their end, but if there are big problems in the track (for example, a clap that is 10db too loud) the changes can be so extreme as they attempt to rectify glaring problems, that the track ends up sounding different to what you sent them. I do not do this and take great care in mixing/mastering the track to your vision, resulting in a better end product!

I’m also a music production teacher, I have taught over 100 students one-on-one and in an academic setting, at EMS in Berlin, where I taught beginner and advanced classes. I mainly teach over Zoom, but have had students at my studio as well.

KMN is the best engineer I've worked with. He's got amazing ears and technical skill, but most importantly, he truly cares about bringing out the full potential of your song. He'll even give feedback on the track before mixing if there is anything in the production that will be an obstacle to getting the best mix and master possible (I haven't met another engineer that does this). The mixes and masters I've got back from KMN are better than those from engineers that charge double what he does.

Interview with KMN Audio

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Basically anything released on Andhera Records. I work closely with the artists to make sure their mix is as clean as possible before I do the mastering. I've even had a Zoom chat with some artists to instruct them how to better their mix!

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Nowadays it seems like the digital realm is getting so close to the analog one that there is almost no difference. Slate Digital's Virtual Mix Rack is emblematic of the truly astounding progress that has been done in the plug-in realm - having used high end analog consoles, eq's and compressors before, I can honestly say I cannot hear the difference between those and high end analog emulation plugins anymore.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: Fulfilling a track's potential. It's really satisfying to see the records I work on get signed to top labels!

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: I don't think there is one. I'm a computer nerd who sits in front of his monitors all day!

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Gain staging is the biggest asset you have - perfect gain staging combined with some basic eq'ing and sidechaining can get you 80% of the way through a mixdown.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Usually Tech House, Minimal/Deep Tech, Melodic House & Techno.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: I think it's the ability to see what the artist I'm working with intended in their vision of the track, and do my best to bring that out in a mix that sounds balanced - punchy yet clean, warm yet clear. This is what I think the job of an engineer is at the purest level.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I don't bring anything to a song - rather, I bring out it's qualities and true potential :)

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: Group everything according to instrument/synth type, and generally work with a top down mixing method. I prefer starting with groups and working my way down!
