Interview with Marcus VonRuden
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I always start with organizing the stems and making sure I'm in the proper mindset of what the client is asking of me, then, I start the mixing process with a top-down method, meaning, I balance the levels and panning while listening to the mix as a whole. If necessary, I will always be sure to remove unwanted noise and artifacts during this process. Next, I will meticulously apply equalization to every stem and autotune to the vocals if necessary. Then, I single out individual parts and customize the appropriate effects to make things more crisp and interesting. This may include compression, reverb, delay, saturation, sidechaining, etc. To finish the mixing process, I will apply automations to keep things dynamic and add a later of intricacy. Then, onto the mastering process! For mastering, will first check the EQ throughout the whole track and make corrections as needed. I will then make a spectrum analysis and make sure the sound fills as much space as possible (depending on the style/genre). Next is to format the LUFS to work with whatever platform the song will be played on. All that's left is playing the song on different audio devices/speakers to make sure it sounds good across the board and that's all there is to it!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: From a mixing and mastering point of view, I really enjoy lesser known artists like HOME and Voyage because of how much sound they are able to cleanly pack into one track with absolute clarity. Their music's perfect quality and tasteful retro aesthetics is what most strongly inspires my work. The Midnight is a perfect example of the way I try to compliment those kinds of sounds with a voice and bring it all together.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I find myself mixing most often for indie rock bands, singer-songwriters, and solo hip hop artists. Though unrelated, I also enjoy doing a lot of live mixing and recording for short films because of my film school background.
