Phi Wolgast on SoundBetter

Session drummer for pop, rock, metal, and indie tracks. Local gigging musician for bands Sue Us! and Sexorcista as well as session drummer for many other projects including two of my own, Pulsar Glitch and GYA. I've played for over 20 years, 5 of which have been professionally.

I will record excellent studio-quality drums for your song(s). Drums will be multi-tracked and sent out as 48kHz 24-bit .wav stems, processed or unprocessed. I play on any song under the metal/rock/pop/indie umbrella - if you're not sure your song fits, send it over and we'll discuss it! I have recorded on dozens of tracks and I play live with many other musicians so I am well-versed in how to write and perform drums that will fit your specific song. I will use a 4-piece kit with a crash, trash crash, ride, and hihats, with other cymbals available upon request.

Send me an email through 'Contact' button above and I'll get back to you asap.

Client was a joy to work with & provided me with many great ideas right from the start. Communication was excellent, very talented individual with a highly professional sounding track & I'm grateful to have been asked to work on his song. Highly recommend!

Interview with Phi Wolgast

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm always working on my main musical project Pulsar Glitch!

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Yes, please go to Chris Commisso for your vocal needs! He is such an excellent writer and singer, and such a wonderful dude to work with.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Controversial opinion, but digital all the way. Analog is great but there are many downsides. It lacks versatility, old analog can be unreliable, and digital can mimic almost anything analog can do almost as well. That's not to say I don't love all my old analog synths though!

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Make sure my style will fit your music before you book me! I'm pretty versatile but your track will undoubtedly have my sound on it.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: Drum kit, Korg Prologue, Ibanez RGIT20FE, Warwick Corvette, and a microphone! Assuming I have a laptop and audio interface, of course.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I've been playing gigs for a couple years and recording drums for over 5 years! I started playing drums when I was 2 years old, and as I got older I learned more and played with more musicians and developed my style a lot. Now I work at a music shop and help other musicians find their dream gear!

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: Very hard-hitting and functional! I like to syncopate rhythms with other instruments, and I love a good tight sound. That's the key to sounding heavy!

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: I would love to work with Ronald Jenkees! He inspired me a lot as an aspiring keyboard player (which I still am).

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Make your instrument(s) or track(s) sound good before you add processing! Sounding good during recording is the most crucial step to a good sound.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: I usually work on rock and metal, mostly metal!

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: I'm excellent and fitting the vibe of a song and improvising!

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I bring my own unique drumming style! I tend to play more straightforward and hard, though I can bring my technical ability and chops to the song as well.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: I'll give a song several listens through to generate ideas and catch the vibe, then sit down and play a few variations of those ideas to the song until I get what I like, then I'll record it and see if the client likes it.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: I've got a Focusrite 8i6 and several Shure and Audix microphones. I preview everything on a set of Beyerdynamic DT990s.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: Most often I'll record multi-tracked drums for a rock or metal song and send them to the client, both mixed and unmixed, to give them an idea of how it can sound in their song.
