Interview with Aaron Chafin
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Im pretty proud of everything I've worked on but Halfway There by Rozes always has a special place in my heart because it was my first major cut as a songwriter and producer as well as mixer. And the song debuted in the top 3 spot on new music friday, and went to BBC and German radio. So after that song came out it was off to the races for me.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Always working on wide array of artists, just wrapped up some Bryce Fox songs that are coming up late 2024, and there are more in the can for him, as well as some new up and coming artists
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Jeff Sojka is another great mixer and a close friend, as well as Denny White for vocals, and Robert Marvin is a great mixer and producer as well!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Right when I give up on analog and go back to digital I end up summing through some pres that I like and decide and go analog mixing, and then I do some in the box mixes and prefer that. So very much whatever flavor I'm liking.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To give you a mix that both you and me are exciting about and enhance the song.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: All of it, from the organization and file management that I learned in my studio days, to figuring out a drum mix, I find it all exciting.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Usually tweaks, and more than down to do tweaks within a reasonable amount.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Mixing can dramatically improve and change how the song is heard, but for the most part what is sent to me is what I mix, sometimes I add additional samples to help augment drums, but unless it is otherwise discussed I don't change the production
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you feel like is lacking in the rough mix, what do you want to maintain, any references?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Being organized with file delivery and checking that all files are correct before sending can really save a lot of time and help get a finished product way faster.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Bae 1073, Flea 47, Juno 106, BG2, Cables?
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been doing this for 16 years, started out playing in bands in high school, and then moved to nashville 11 years ago and have been working in studios and touring since I've been here. Worked under multiple mix engineers and producers and eventually got opportunities that allowed to be on my own.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I spent a lot of time trying to tame my tendencies to augment everything in a song, but I've found that my favorite songs have very few elements with enough real estate in the production to be tastefully reckless with a key element in the production. So I've landed on a style that is fully aware what makes things technically good, but also finding what makes something an artistic statement.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Artists that have a strong vision always create a clear path, but even artists that are searching for their sound excite too because I love to help people search for their sound as well.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Filtering out frequencies on a whole group of tracks can dramatically enhance certain sections or transitions of a production and really help show the potential of what the arrangement could be.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I have songs out in all genres Rock, Rap, Country, and Pop, but I mostly stay in the Pop world and alternative indie rock. But a knowledge and blending of all genres which I feel is key to sounding current.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Outside of the technical aspect of mixing, I feel like I have a strong skill of maintaining perspective for a song regardless how long I've been working on it.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to find the emotional core of the song and try to emphasize that as much as possible, and try to augment the authenticity of the artist.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When mixing I listen down to the song once or twice, and then promptly start making moves on what I think the songs needs or how I can improve it.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: 300 square foot recording studio designed from the ground up to be a room tuned to mix and produce, as well as track drums, piano, and other live instruments. Two floating cloud panels, Nine 4 inch thick 6 foot tall 4 foot wide panels across all of the walls and a attack wall in front of the listening position.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Producers that I look up to are Paul Epworth, Mike Elizondo, Greg Kurstin, Arial Reichstad, as well Tom Elmhurst, Spike Stent, and Manny Maroquin
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My clients reach out to me often for mixing work, either to take their song to whole new level or to push It the final 10%.
