Interview with R. Newell Wood Music
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I've scored for three short films which won "Best Music" in their category for the Orlando Independent Filmmakers' challenge series. I was nominated for a fourth.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone willing to go the extra mile and provide a guarantee of satisfaction. Music is an art, and sometimes it takes multiple iterations to produce just the right sound.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Assuming there is no electricity - I'd take a recorder (instrument), xylophone, bassoon, bongo drum (for release of frustrations, if nothing else!) and writing pad, with the hopes I'd one day be rescued and could contribute written pieces to the repertoire.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been writing music for over twenty years. Only relatively recently have I decided to take it to the next level, simply because there are not enough hours in the day to have a day job and write as much music as I would like.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Classical with a hint of "neo".
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Thomas Newman. I love the simple, beautiful passages he writes to bring out just the right emotions.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Know your libraries. There are intricacies to each virtual instrument that you need to be aware of to create the most realistic sounds.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Film scoring, orchestral, small ensembles.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have an intuitive approach to orchestration. I know where to use various instruments for best effect. I indeed "hear the music in my head".
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can write lyrics, especially for theatrical productions and musicals.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depends on the project. For large film scores, I always develop a working cue sheet, after first spotting the film a number of times. I decide on overall style with input from the director and set the preliminary instrumentation. Once I start the cues, I develop a few contrasting cues and request feedback from the director before moving forward.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use Studio One as my DAW, with a large number of virtual instruments, including many Spitfire libraries and numerous Kontakt-powered instruments.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Two Steps from Hell, James Newton Howard, Alexandre Desplat, Thomas Newman, John Williams, Hans Zimmer.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Custom composition, primarily orchestral in style and instrumentation; film scoring; theatrical music, including lyrics and score; other custom music as requested. I have experience composing film scores for comedy, historical drama, light sci-fi, and fantasy.
