Interview with Desbow
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Project: The Lullaby Project – The Tone of Love at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) Role: Producer and Composer for two tracks for Expe This project allowed me to compose and produce two original tracks for Expe, contributing to the Lullaby Project at the SNFCC. I crafted every musical element, from melodies to arrangements, while Expe's vocals brought the compositions to life. The opportunity to collaborate on such a meaningful initiative was both an honor and a testament to my dedication to creating original, impactful music.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to deliver original, custom productions that are crafted specifically for you and never generic.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I enjoy most about my job is the entire creative process, from building the initial idea to crafting a complete track.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that producing music is just making beats. In reality, it involves shaping the entire track including melody, rhythm, arrangement, and details to create a polished, professional final product.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask about the artist’s goals for the track, the style or mood they’re aiming for, any reference tracks they like, and specific elements they want included. This helps me create a beat or production that fits their needs perfectly.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Choose a producer who understands your style, brings originality to every track, and delivers polished, professional music. Look for someone who can turn your ideas into a finished product that stands out.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: MPC LIVE II
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started producing music as a hobby and have turned it into a career, with 17 years of experience crafting beats and full productions.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Street-inspired with a polished edge.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Simplicity is the Key.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Most of my projects are in contemporary styles like hip-hop, trap, and beyond.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is creating unique, custom productions.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a fresh perspective and detail-oriented production that makes every track memorable.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by understanding the artist’s vision and direction for the track. From there, I build the main melodic idea, add drums and bass, and then refine the production with arrangement and “ear candy” elements that give the track its unique character.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I produce custom, release-ready tracks tailored to each artist’s vision.
