Interview with MTTL STUDIO
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Hearing new people and new sounds is always great.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: As an engineer people think we can fix and make anything sound good and that’s just not true. The recording is 80% of the mixing process. If we receive a vocal take with no energy in it we can’t add that energy back. A poorly recorded vocal we at the end still sound bad even if the mix is spot on because it was recorded badly, etc..
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, UA Apollo twin, Sennheiser hd 280 pros, Yamaha HS7, Shure SM7B
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I feel the same about everything I mix and master. I give my 100% attention to the song and it turns out great.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Debut album for an signed artist
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I like a little of both but if i had to choose one it would be digital. I feel like it fits todays sound better.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Great Radio Ready vocals.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How long until I get my song back? Within a day, but if you have any revisions you want done it will be back no later then an extra day.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Mood of song? autotune sound? any specific delays or reverbs on certain lines or prases?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: See if you like their work provided and talk to them a bit.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Audio Engineer. I have been doing this since i could remember.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: minium
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: No one specific. I do really love working with more underground artist though.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: If you start second guessing your decisions take a break and come back and listen later.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hiphop. Rap. Trap, Singer/Songwriter, R&b
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing is definitely a huge skill I have specially using eq. If I had one plugin to mix a vocal with it would be an eq. I spend lots of time in a eq to shape the vocal and make it sound just right.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can set the vibe of a song and make you feel the emotion and get the story across better.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I have a very minimalist work flow. I don't try to do too much instead I try to do just enough. A lot of work is done inside they box with as little processing as possible to avoid a super digital sound.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: costly but simple
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Mixed by Ali Wavy wayne
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing and Mastering
