Interview with David York
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: My next single!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, because I don't own any analog gear
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will provide quality service, in a timely manner
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Music has always been a part of my life, as I started singing at an early age. I toured professionally for three years, performing all over the country. I then decided that I wanted to pick up music production so I wouldn't have to depend on anyone else to create what I envisioned. I've now been producing/songwriting for over five years.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My laptop, my microphone, my interface, my acoustic guitar, and a solar panel charging station lol
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Jon Bellion, because he is my biggest inspiration
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Go with what 'feels' right, and not necessarily what 'sounds' right
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My greatest strength is coming up with good melodies/hooks. It comes very natural to me and I believe that every song I write for, I can make catchy and memorable, no matter the genre.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can also add production advice because I produce myself, and have the ear to tell if anything is off.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The majority of my work is writing/singing toplines for other producers.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: If I'm hired to write a topline and/or record the vocals, I'll usually come up with the vocal melody first. I do this because I believe it's most important that the topline has the right notes/rhythm, sitting nicely in the pocket. That way once the lyrics are added, they'll hit harder and fit better with the instrumental/beat. If I'm producing/beat making, I'll create whatever I'm inspired by in the moment. But when I have a client, I'll follow they're lead and work to create exactly what they're going for.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My home studio includes the professional grade Røde K2 microphone, which I connect to Logic Pro X through my Scarlett 2i2 interface. I have a Martin Acoustic guitar as well as a Fender Telecaster.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My biggest inspiration has to be Jon Bellion. He's the reason I got into music production. I also respect Russ because of what he's accomplished independently. Both those guys showed me it's possible to do everything yourself, from the songwriting to the mastering.
