Interview with Mixed By Tobiah

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My first single of 2020 titled 'Talk Nice'. I am proud of it because it was something I worked on from start to finish entirely by myself; no outside help whatsoever and it was selected for an official apple music playlist with little to no promotion.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My own upcoming EP A collaborative EP consisiting of various alternative afrofusion Artists for a producer halfway across the world

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet. I am new to the platform

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital; simply because of the software era I grew up in. Ironic however because I find myself investing in software that tries to capture and imitate that analog feeling.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To put my heart and soul into their project

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The ability to create

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How much I charge. My response is that it varies with the nature of the project.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That my skills aren't useful/transferable in the real. Which is ironic because if you look around you all you will see is art. This world is nothing without creatives.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: 1. Their inspiration behind the project in question, 2. The creative direction for the project, 3. The theme (if any) 4. What they want to achieve out of the project

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be open and honest about what you want and what you hope to achieve

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My laptop My Microphone My interface My headphones and most importantly; my brain

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started out as a Producer when I was 16 but shortly after discovered my love for writing songs as well and thus began my musical journey as a singer/songwriter and Producer. I have been doing this for around 10 years now.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My sound is known as 'Afrochill'. Afrochill is a style/sub-genre, birthed from the Fusion of Afrobeats and Alternative modern R&B as these are my two major influences in music. It is chilled, smooth but also both vibrant and dark. Through my songs I like to have open, honest discussions about the vulnerabilities of love and lust, the importance of self-love and staying true to one's self.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: The Weeknd, because his 2011 House Of Balloons Mixtape gave me clarity and direction. I heard it for the first time and suddenly had a sense of purpose with what I wanted to do with my sound and how I wanted to make people feel.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Understand the basic fundamentals of the genre you're involved in, before you start creating. Even if you're bending genres and creating hybrids; you still need to know the rules so that you know how to break those rules correctly and creatively.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: -Afrochill (which is my own signature sound) -Afrobeats, Afrofusion - R&B -Hiphop, Trap -UK Rap, Grime, Drill

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My ability to pivot. I adapt to the situation. I like to be fluid because I think fluidity is necessary when you're stuck and you need to change course or pivot in order to overcome all obstacles; both in the creative industry and generally in life.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: My authenticity and diversity of thought. Diversity in the sense that I am a singer/songwriter, beatmaker and mixing engineer so having me on your song is like having 3 extra brains working on your song to produce the best results.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Before starting a project I make a checklist of things that need to be achieved in the final project and I analyse the best way to go about achieving them. This prevents me from straying away from the original idea/goal of the project.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I hire a professional studio space such as pirate studios when I need to work on my projects.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: The Weeknd Kanye West Burna boy Wizkid

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Mixing and mastering vocals for songs, podcasts, voice-overs etc. Sound design and beat production for artistes in genres such as Afrofusion, hiphop, R&B, Trap, Uk Rap, Grime, Drill etc. Creating theme songs/soundtracks for vloggers, youtube channels, podcast hosts and influencers.
