Interview with Kat Dion

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My song VULNÉRABILITÉ, I worked along-side and co-produced with Louis Coté. Worked on the top line with Mariami and wrote the lyrics in my mother tongue French. It's my best work so far, I believe.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently working on a french pop EP with the producer Louis Coté for my pop act Kat Dion.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Mariami

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Though question. Analog sounds wayyy better but for the practicality, and for travellers like me, Digital wins.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise that you will be listened to and heard.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love that I can hear about different peoples points of views and goals. Be a part of other artists journeys.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That there's no place for mistakes. Sometimes beautiful things come out of mistakes and it is very important to try things, letting go of the scary feeling that everything has to be good in the first try.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Who is your biggest inspiration? What are the 3 most important things in your life? What do you want to put into the world?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: I think the best thing is to talk with a few different people and really find someone who specializes in your sound/style. Then, it's really important to have a clear idea or to communicate with the provider as much as possible to be able to get the best quality product.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: My laptop (Macbook), Scarlett 2i2 interface, Shure SM7B, Emulator synth and a Mic stand.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started out writing poetry, acting, dancing and singing. Then I moved on a learned the piano for a bit. I really started songwriting 8 years ago and producing 2 years ago.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I am very into the 80's sounds, most of the music I listen to is a bit darker, I listen to a lot of new wave, so It's always fun when I can introduce a bit of darkness or mystic into a song. I love heavy drums and synths.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: My dream would be to work with Lady Gaga.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: A song is a story and like a book it has chapters. Each part you have to introduce new sounds and keep the listener interested.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I usually work on Electronic/Synth Pop tracks.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Top lines!

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bring emotion and vulnerability, I love anything cinematic. I like to play around with different genres.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I usually start by creating a vibe with a very simplistic beat. Then I start the melody/top line, when I am satisfied with the melody choice, I start working on the arrangement and start writing the lyrics. I finish off with the rest of the production and edits.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have a full time access to a professional studio in Montreal. Modular Synthesizers, guitars, bass, Vintage Arturia synths set, SHURE SM7B, different types of recording mics (condensers).

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I am immensely inspired by Charlie Puth, Mark Ronson, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus. I also grew up listening to a lot of Bowie & Depeche Mode.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I mostly do songwriting and top lines, that's what I think is my specialty. I am very into the nostalgic pop, I also love to write ballads. It truly depends on what the client wants.
