Interview with Joel Schwendener
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Nehilo is a project that me and my friend Justin put in all our power to grow and it starts to gain traction. After covid is under control we aim for the stars and try to make a living out of what we love doing the most: creating.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: at the moment i am working on 2 songs for our artist project aswell as on an anthem for a festival this summer.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because it's more accessible, less expensive and doesn't take too much space. The difference is not really noticeable for the average listener and with some tricks you can emulate analog gear for quite a bit.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: A song they could be proud of!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love creating something. No matter if it's a song or a video. I am a creator and i love creating.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That i am just pressing knobs, it's so cliche
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Could you send me 3 songs that represent your desire as good as possible.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be as specific as possible to avoid disappointment if the result turns into another direction.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Laptop, A midi Keyboard, Speakers, Headphones and probably a drumpad
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I produce music since 8 years but with some breaks. Since 4 years i am doing it pretty much every day
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: happy, emotional, energetic, nostalgic, yearning
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: KSHMR because of his huge skillset, Flume for his very unique sound and Rick Rubin for his ability to get the best out of every person in the room.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more. Focus on a few Elements and make them sound as good as you can.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work mostly on EDM and Pop songs.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My ability to hear why certain songs work so well and are so well produced.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I would consider myself a very good songwriter. Not lyrically, but musically. I have an ear for simple melodies and small details in the arrangement that can emphasize certain parts of the song quite well.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Usually i get 2-3 reference tracks and maybe an acapella and then i go from there on until the song is finished. As simple as that.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I am a simple man, i love producing everywhere. Most of the work is done "in the box". I am a software guy that really wants the songwriting to be perfect. For the mixdown i work in a studio built by Jan Morel
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Kshmr, Illenium, Nora en Pure,
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly do complete tracks as co or ghostproducer, but sometimes i do mixing work aswell
