Hi, I’m Dave Gaskin—music producer, songwriter, and musician with 25 years of experience. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with talented artists like Bob Furgo (Leonard Cohen), Robin Aube (Daniel Lanois), and Rik Emmett (Triumph). My music has been featured on national CBC television and used in sync across the world. I studied audio engineering at Recording Arts Canada and Music Composition and Production at Humber College, giving me a strong technical and creative foundation.

I specialize in producing, co-writing, and mixing rock, pop, folk, and indie music, working closely with artists to turn their ideas into fully realized tracks. If we work together, you can be assured I’ll treat your music with the same care and dedication that I give my own work. Let's make something you're proud of. Interview with David B. Gaskin

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My last mix. I was happy to be able to capture what the artist was looking for and was quite happy with the way it ended up sounding :)

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Finishing up writing and recording some personal tunes

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not too familiar with a lot of other providers at this time.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital because it's what I have to work with. Would love to incorporate more analog into future projects though.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I'll do my best to make sure you're satisfied with your finished mix.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Getting the right balance in the mix and trying to capture the right vibe in the track.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Do you do auto-tune :P

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I have no idea. Maybe that I can make a bad recording sound good. That's a myth.No amount of auto-tuning can fix a bad vocal.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What sound are you going for?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Have your song well-written/well-produced first. Try to get really good-sounding clean stems. Have a reference track in mind and communicate your ideas!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A guitar, a piano, a composition tablet, a recording app and my iPhone :D

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Since I was 15, so over 20 years. I pursued music in a band, went off to study music at school, then I sort of lost my confidence in it for a while. I'm just now trying to get back to how I felt when I was a younger man.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Hmm, I don't know. I like a bit of edge, and some warmth. But at the end of the day, the track has to feel good and feel at home when you listen to it.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Probably the Eilish twins. I'm really fascinated by what they're doing sonically and in their productions.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Get the input right and the output will sound much better aka get it right from the source.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I love to challenge myself with new genres but I am probably most at home with contemporary music and instruments.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Probably my ears. Having taught guitar for so long and learning how to pick up music by ear, and then going to college and doing all the crazy jazz ear training has certainly given me a unique advantage.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a critical and discerning ear, in terms of mix, production, and composition, as well as my years of experience as a musician, songwriter, and engineer.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I like to get familiar with the project first and get the project setup in my DAW. I like to have all the requirements known so I can work without too many hiccups in the process. I like to stay communicative with the client so we're all on the same page. I work efficiently but carefully, not wanting to waste time or bark up the wrong tree for too long.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a pretty simple home studio setup, with a Windows 10 Laptop, running Reaper as my DAW currently, a Yamaha-P85 keyword, an M-Audio MIDI controller, a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2, and a bargain condenser mic I also play guitar so have a Taylor and Cherry Sunburst Les Paul laying around.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm inspired by anyone who is passionate about what they do and turn that inspiration into something new and interesting, regardless of the style or genre.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: At the moment, I'm doing a lot of audio editing and audio production for podcasts, spoken audio recordings, and the like. I take unprocessed audio and turn it into something that can compete with what you might hear on your favorite podcasting platform.
