Interview with Steven Aquilina
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am so proud and honored to have worked on two tracks for Loot the Body. He writes songs using D&D lore books, and has a killer since of music production. So naturally, as a D&D player and mix engineer, I instantly fell in love with his music. I got to mix and master "In Search of the Unknown" (a synth bop) and "Isle of Dread" (a sea shanty). I also worked on unreleased versions of "Axe of the Dwarvish Lords" and "Skate Wizards".
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Unlimited revisions and quick turn-around times. I want you to be happy with the end result no matter how many tries it takes. You get what you want, and I usually end up learning something new; Win-Win!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love mastering so much. It's possible to work through a whole album in a single day and hit the mark. A lot better for my attention span and work style than mixing lol. A lot mastering services are over priced because they have so much over head cost. Even though I could charge more for my experience and my ear, I'd rather be a more affordable option.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That tons of expensive equipment makes any song better. Digital tools are SO good these days. The tools are affordable and accessible. What matters is how well someone can use them. Who has put in the time to get good?
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Asian Kung-fu Generation. Loved them for over a decade. I just find their music has a great balance between intrigue and expectation.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Treat your room and watch your gain structure.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring over a decade of experience to every mix. My goal is to create a mix that has detailed transients, analog character, and a clear stereo field. Never harsh or boomy. I can provide unlimited revisions and quick turn-around times because I use a digital workflow that allows me to recall any mix instantly.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to communicate with clients about their project goals, then preview and give feedback on the audio files they provide before beginning any work. If there is a problem from a previous step, best to address it before we begin work rather than try to fix it in the mix or in the master.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work completely digitally using Studio One with Adam t7v monitors and JBL LSRS10 Sub in a well treated room.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Remote mastering, single stereo track or stems.
