Interview with Tito Lopez
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The project that I liked the most was the "Tribute to the Heroes of the Malvinas". A production that featured high-level artists such as: Alejandro Lerner, El Chaqueño Palavecino, Martín Fabio (Kapanga), Diego Topa, Guillermo Novellis (La Mosca), Valeria Lynch, Darío Volonté, Rodrigo Tapari, Héroe Lírico Pop, Ricardo Mollo ( Divided), Fabio Santana, "La Mona" Jiménez, G Sony, Emanuel Noir (Ke Characters), Juan Carlos Baglietto and Mario Pergolini. My role was to make the musical arrangement, the musical production and the recording of guitars!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working with several artists, including Jazmin Sparta. I'm excited about his work!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not for the moment.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, makes corrections/feedback faster.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will do my best to make your music sound top notch!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: See the customer happy to have their songs published on Spotify!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What is your budget? What is your deadline?
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That Quick means cheap; experience gives us engineers the ability to make quick decisions.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I always listen to the artist, their story, what motivates them to make their music. That way I'll have a correct address!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: The question I always ask them is: why do you want to make music? and what do you expect from that?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I recommend that you take a risk and test my greatest potential so that we can create HITS!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, audio interface, midi controller, monitors and an electric guitar.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been in music for 15 years, I started playing guitar as a session player for different artists in my city. 5 years ago I began to produce and I have had an intense journey and was able to work with many artists nationally and internationally.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Post Romantic/Impressionist.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would like to work with Kehlani. I consider that she is one of the greatest artists of the moment, and I would like to be part of her songs, either producing or playing the guitar.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: R&B, Pop & Urban Music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest ability is producing and composing music.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I usually provide everything creative that the artist thinks is necessary for his song, be it finding new harmonies, restructuring sections, a guitar solo that suits the discourse of the song, among other things.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually have a long first talk with the artist about his references, his personal tastes, his expectations, where he wants to aim with his music. Once this is done, I usually start with a first sketch of his music, at this stage I usually make all the necessary changes until the artist can be satisfied. Then I proceed to produce the song, either looking for better sounds or hiring session musicians (depending on the occasion). In the event that they wish to work with me on mixing and mastering, I usually work in the same way, I try to make the most of the talks and go where the artist wants. In general, in this section I look for the artist to point to a certain Spotify playlist to find an aesthetic within the mix and mastering that suits their expectations.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: In my studio I have the Audient ID14 audio interface, I usually work with Sennheiser headphones, Shure sm57 and Rode NT1-A microphones. I usually produce with my M-Audio Keystation49 MK3 midi controller and my Luthier VUL guitar (similar to Telecaster Deluxe 72´). Regarding mixing and mastering, I work in the box with top level plugins such as Plugin Alliance, Fabfilter, Softubes, Waves, Izotope, among others.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I get a lot of inspiration from producers and mixing engineers like Jaycen Joshua, Illangelo, Tainy, Mosty, among others. When it comes to musicians, I'm usually very inspired by John Mayer, Beau Diako, Kaspar Jalili and Ryūichi Sakamoto.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually record guitars, do production, mixing and mastering for my clients.
