Interview with Carlos Rafael Zamacona
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: While mixing and mastering are highly technical crafts that demands a specific skill set, it’s important to remember that music is ultimately about feelings—enjoying, singing out loud, and dancing. Some mixes might not be technically perfect, yet they’re incredible because the music itself resonates so deeply. When choosing a mixer, look for someone who has the technical expertise and truly understands the heart of your music. That combination of emotional connection and technical skill can work wonders, bringing your songs to life in the most impactful way.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my journey as a musician, dedicating 10 years to studying classical guitar. Interestingly, I later pursued a degree in Economics, but along the way, I rediscovered my true passion for music. Seven years ago, I began studying Music Production, eventually earning a degree in Music Production and Audio Engineering, specializing in Cinematographic Music Composition. Since then, I’ve worked as a mixing engineer for Music and Home Entertainment. I feel incredibly fortunate to spend every day doing what I love most—bringing sound and music to life.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: If I had to describe my style, I’d say I have no fixed style. My approach is entirely guided by the music itself—I focus on what the song needs to truly shine. That said, I gravitate toward creating mixes that are clean and emotive, dynamic and impactful, ensuring they resonate deeply with listeners while leaving a lasting impression.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with C. Tangana because he’s a brilliant musician who constantly pushes boundaries. He’s fearless in breaking the rules, blending genres, and innovating with new sounds, all while staying true to himself and his unique artistic voice. That balance of creativity and authenticity is incredibly inspiring.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more. A well-arranged and passionately performed song, crafted with true artistry, can create a deeper emotional connection and leave a greater impact on the listener.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Most of the time, I work on acoustic genres like rock and pop ballads, I focus on bringing out the natural warmth and emotional depth of music. That said, I also collaborate extensively with clients in urban genres, blending modern production techniques with creative flair to deliver dynamic and impactful mixes. This versatility allows me to adapt my approach to suit the unique character of each project.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is undoubtedly listening. As both a musician and a mixing engineer, I approach my work first and foremost as a listener. I pride myself on my ability to truly hear—not just the music, but the artist's vision and emotions behind it. This skill allows me to be highly analytical without ever losing sight of the emotional essence of a song. It’s this balance of technical precision and emotional understanding that sets my work apart.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: What I bring to a song is the ability to make your recorded tracks sound their absolute best—meticulously balanced, impactful, and seamlessly translatable across all listening environments. Most importantly, I ensure every element complements and elevates your song. To me, a great mix doesn’t just meet your musical vision—it exceeds it. I let the music guide every decision, from levels to processing and effects, ensuring the emotional core of the song connects powerfully with the listener. My goal is to enhance your artistry and bring your vision to life in a way that leaves a lasting impression.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process is all about collaboration and connection. I start by having in-depth conversations with the artists to truly understand their vision and the essence of their art. This helps me build a strong creative foundation tailored to their unique needs. From there, I dive into the music, listening closely to uncover what it’s asking for to shine at its best. Every decision I make is in service of the art, ensuring the final mix resonates both technically and emotionally. Together, we bring the artist's vision to life in a way that captivates and connects with listeners.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm working completely ITB with a Mac Mini M2 Pro, Pro Tools, Studio One, Cuabse and Reaper. I'm monitoring on a pair of Sennheiser's HD650 and PreSonus Eris E5XT, via an Audiobox USB96
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm deeply inspired by Al Schmitt, whose ability to create stunning mixes with minimal processing is remarkable. I also greatly admire Serban Ghenea for his precision and artistry, and Bob Katz for his expertise in mastering and his innovative approach to sound. Additionally, I find Nacho Sotelo's and Craig Bauer work on modern Latin mixes incredibly inspiring; his sound brings a fresh and vibrant perspective to the genre.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly mix music for independent artists. They typically come to me with a clear purpose and vision for their projects, and my role is to bring their recordings to life. I focus on crafting mixes that not only meet the highest technical standards but also capture and amplify the emotional essence of their art, ensuring their music connects deeply with listeners."
