Experienced, unique and emotive vocalist and songwriter; indie/rock/pop specialist with extensive national radio success with tracks I've sung and written. Topline/song writer with years of experience writing for successful indie bands and library music in all styles and genres.

I provide exciting, emotive, authentic and well recorded vocal takes specialising in indie/indie-pop/new-wave/pop styles. I am experienced and proficient at writing and performing harmonies and double tracks to bulk out and highlight key musical moments. As a songwriter myself, I always try to deliver beyond what is required of me, tracking additional harmonies, ad libs etc that come to mind giving the client more options to work with.

I also offer my songwriting services in the form of topline writing, track writing, and lyric writing. I have over a decade of songwriting experience and my current project Youth Sector have received widespread acclaim across national radio (BBC R1, Elton John's Rocket Hour, BBC 6 Music) and international music publications (NME, CLASH, DIY). I also write production music for award winning production music company Chøppersaurus so am well versed in writing and producing for varying styles and to different briefs. I have experience in writing and arranging for strings and brass but am especially confident writing for guitar, bass and keys.

Interview with Nick Tompkins

Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To put as much passion, time and effort into their project as I would any of my own projects. I'll always put as much into my performance/writing as I possibly can.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being able to spend my time working on great music and improving at my craft while doing it.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Indie, rock and pop
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Writing energetic, exciting toplines and singing them with passion and urgency.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First thing for me is always to get a good dialogue going with the client, asking ahead whether they have any references, ideas, inspirations in mind whether it's vocals, lyrics or topline writing. I'll always propose a date to the client by which I can get the work sent by, including allowances for revisions etc. I'll send a full version of the track complete with BVs, ad libs and double tracks as well as a VOX ONLY version in order to make the vocal as clear as possible. After any revisions are made following feedback, I send all stems dry and untreated in a Zip folder. Job's a good'un.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I tend to use an MXL 990 vocal mic complete with reflection filter, pop shield and and some acoustic treatment in my home studio. I'm a big fan of Soundtoys and Fabfilter plugins to make everything sound nice when I send off examples of vocal takes to clients.
