Interview with Kieran Sid
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: When you hire me you can expect first class treatment - everything will be custom made to your specifications, no short cuts, no excuses. I keep you posted at all steps of the process and make sure you are always 100% satisfied with the product. The final product will be a radio-ready banger, which perfectly captures your vision whilst also standing out from the crowd.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping other artists' bring their vision to life. I love being involved in a process whereby an idea/vision in an artist's head is eventually turned into a beautiful piece of music that the whole world can enjoy!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Take the time to clearly communicate your vision and expect nothing less than excellence.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been doing this for 7 years now. I originally started out as a producer and DJ in dance music, working in a variety of genres. However in more recent years, I've been delving in the worlds of pop, hip-hop & R&B. My journey has allowed me to learn so much about various different genres and therefore bring a unique element to my tracks which someone who focussed on one genre simply couldn't.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: The perfect balance of energy and emotion. Tracks which have a strong emotional core but also have that energetic vibe about them
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on a very wide range of different genres. I originally started out as a dance producer and engineer so am well equipped to produce and engineer EDM and other dance genres. In more recent years, I have focussed more on pop, hip-hop and R&B.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Versatility. The core of any great song is emotion and I am well equipped to translate powerful emotions into multiple genres.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: When producing and songwriting, I bring something unique to each track which is personal to that artist. I take their ideas and influences but also add something unique into the mix so that it can easily stand out amongst all the other tracks out there. My ethos is that every track should an element which grabs the listener and makes them have to listen to the rest of this track. It could be anything from the drums, music, lyrics, melody but the bottom line is I create attention grabbing tracks which are true to that artist's vision.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: The fundamental first step is completely understanding the artist inside out. Their background, their influences, their vision and their ideas. Once I understand the artist and the sound they want, I get to work making their dream track. I keep the artist in the loop every step of the way so that they are always in control of the final product and am happy with it. I share my ideas and thoughts but ultimately it's about making a song that the artist can play a millions times and still love!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: On the production side, most clients reach out with a rough idea of the kind of song they want, often providing reference tracks from existing artists that show the kind of vibe they are looking for. I then create a instrumental which is true to their vision but also has a unique style to it that doesn't sound like anyone else. Some clients come with existing melodies or lyrics they wrote either acappella or to another beat. I help these clients by "re-producing" the track, i.e. building a brand new beat around their lyrics. As a songwriter, producers will come to me with fully polished instrumentals but they need the perfect lyrics and melodies which fit the vibe of the song. In these cases, I will write lyrics with their vision in mind, whilst also creating the perfect sing-along vocal melody. I will provide these clients with fully typed and structured lyrics and vocal melody (Both on the piano and sung by myself). As an engineer, it's all about taking a demo and bringing it to life. Giving that final polish which turns it from a good idea into a unique track which is at the highest professional level. I mix and master my tracks so that they are radio ready and stand out from the crowd.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm in a fully acoustically treated studio which ensure my mixing and mastering is to a professional standard. I'm using a pair of Adam A7Xs speakers which provide incredible detail and clarity when working. I also have a pair of Audio-Technica ATH M50x Headphones for referencing. I'm running both of these through my UAD Apollo Twin Soundcard. I also have a Neumann TLM 103 Microphone which allows me to get great quality vocal ideas down for songwriting projects. I also have a NI Komplete MIDI Keyboard. In the box, I use Abelton Live for producing and engineering as well as the industry standard plugins from UA, Fab-Filter, Waves etc.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on a 6 track demo EP for an artist. It's a hybrid of pop & Hip-Hop which I'm really excited about. I've been the sole producer, songwriter and engineer on the EP so it's my baby!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! Using analog gear but then manipulating it within a DAW creates the perfect blend.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My headphones, Ableton, my laptop, a midi keyboard and my microphone
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Having a rough vocal in place when producing a beat will always help get you to the final product faster. You spend less time fixating on small details and can focus on the bigger picture & getting the vibe right.
