Interview with Matteo Bertini
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Working on an album, while the first single will be out on January 24th and other two projects with two very talented singers.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The best thing about my job is expressing myself and make listeners and co-workers fell the same vibes I feel when I crreate my music.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started playing drums when I was 2, but I've never been as close to music as when I was 13, when I started making my first productions, in 2016. At 18 I started taking piano lessons. In the meanwhile I was working with my recording studio recording my clients. In 2023 I started the academy to get the Bachelor of Arts in Music Production.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: It's purely pop, but I often use experimental and industrial sounds to play my drums and always search something that could capture the attention of the listeners to create something unique, strating from the the selection of piano sounds, guitars sounds and synths.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with the producer Louis Bell, because he has been an inspiration for my works since a lot of years so far and I've learned a lot of things from his works.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Never stop learning and keep follow the research to get a personal sound who characterizes your works to make them sound unique.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring my idea of the music and the same vibe I always give to my songs, starting with my production template that allows me to characterize my productions with my sounds and, most of all, a kind of slight melancholy mixed with a very pop sound, all of this gets to a unique result.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start a conversation with artits about daily life so I can understand how they are. Then, I start by playing some chords or finding the perfect sound for the vibe we want to reach. While producing, I start proposing some lines as vocal lines, so we can start to write the lyrics. After that, I finish the production by adding fx, drums and everything else, before we start to record the song we gave life to. I always follow the project by start to finish to be certain that the song keeps with herself the same vibes it had at the beginning of the work. During the recording session I help the singer recording the lead vox, ear candy and harmonizing the vocal, also with choirs if necessary. After the recording, I edit vocals as I agreed with the singer/band and I talk with the mix engineer (if it's not me) and explain to him the sound we wanted to give to the song, touching base with him to understand how to get the best result. Last, I do the same with the mastering engineer.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: In my personal studio I have my PC that works with Windows 10, where I have Pro Tools and Fl Studio, a pair of Focal Alpha 50 monitors, an Apollo Twin by Universal Audio, two microphones: Shure SM7db and Rode NT1-A which I use to record my demos, Komplete Kontrol s61 mk3 as keyboard and a small recording booth. This is the setup I use when I want to produce and write new songs, strarting from scratch by myself or with artists, or I want to record a demo to send to an artist. The studio where I usually record songs or mix has a pair of Neumann KH 120-II and Yamaha HS80M, with Pro Tools and Cubase, a 16 channel mixer by Trident and a lot of outboard like 1176 and LA-2A by Klark, an SPL Goldmike 9844 Pre and two EQ Pultec still by Klark. This studio has a recording booth with different types of microphones, but the one I always use is the Lewitt lct 440.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Louis Bell, Andrew Watt, Frank Dukes, Charlie Puth
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The mosto common type of work I do for my clients is producing and writing a song for them, starting by an idea I have or from scratch by playing some piano chords on the keyboard, Then I start building the structure of the song while I sing some vocal line I could put in. After that, I start writing the lyrics and record them by myself. At this point I can finish the arrangements and give a bit of mix to the demo, just so I can send it to the client.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: A mix of both.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Hip Hop and Rock music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Determination and problem solving, that make me be capable of easily making group with artists or with others songwriters, lyricists and producers.
