Interview with Keno Kai

Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I want a good grasp on what sound they're going for. Ill ask them for things like their favorite tracks, how much bass they like (given choices by song), and other various questions throughout the mixing process.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Make sure the engineer doesn't just see your track as a number and only aims to finish it as fast as possible. That usually just means they aim for maximum profit without putting the special attention and care into the track that it deserves.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Someone like Stephan Bodzin would be a wonder to work with. There's so much detail and change throughout every song that mixing it would be a delight. His music always tells a story without words and that's just beautiful.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Especially with EDM music, it's very easy to have the track be too busy all the time.That can be repetitive and tiring on the listener's ears. Make sure you take out elements and use automation frequently enough so that your track has enough contrast and remains interesting.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work with all types of EDM music, however I mostly work on Techno (my LIFE), House and Trance.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing is where my specialty lies, and that's what everyone knows me for. I also have skill in mastering. I give arrangement advice and make changes with permission from the artist if i find it necessary.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: It's Musical Science! Mixing is one of those jobs that scratches my analytical, problem-solving side as well as my creative side all in one. It also helps me understand people through the music they make. It's a way to open your mind and explore different cultures and tastes.
