Interview with Raphael Sater
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: -> combine traditional and modern approach across genres. Production/engineer/playing
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Pop/Rock, R'n'B
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started playing guitar in 2012, later taking on keys and bass. I took part in a 5 week guitar program at Berklee College of Music (Boston, USA) in 2015. This led me in 2016 to study guitar at Music Academy International (Nancy, France) a school a part of the Berklee network. I then studied songwriting at BIMM (London, UK) where I met with Italian singer Joe Basco, leading me to record with him at Abbey Road Studios in 2018 (The Gatehouse). Wanting to get into production, I studied at Abbey Road Institute (London, UK) where I recorded guitar in Studio 2 and Studio 3. After graduating, I worked for Abbey Road Institute as a technician between 2020 and 2021, overlooking facilities, equipment, bookings, as well as providing workshops and academic support. As part of that position, my hours were divided between number 5 Abbey Road and Studio 13 (Gorillaz/Blur) in Ladbroke Grove.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Production, co-writing and session playing.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on several singles to be released over the summer, where I am involved as a producer, songwriter and musician.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital! The reliability, speed and flexibility of a Digital workflow make this one a no brainer. That being said, having also extensively worked with analog (Neve consoles, studio outboard, vintage Moog/Roland synths and countless valve guitar amps), the added value and character of analog equipment can't be neglected. Being proficient with both is a great asset.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What role do you want the instrument(s) I am contributing to be having in the arrangement? Do you have references for parts/sounds/songs?
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: In terms of D.A.W, I work on Logic Pro as well as Pro Tools. My go-to guitars are my trusty Fender Stratocaster and Gibson SG, which offer complementary and contrasting flavors. I also record bass on my Music Man StingRay HH. For my keyboard needs, I couple my Nord Stage 3 with VST's such as Arturia, U-He or Native Instruments. I also possess an ample selection of plugins (Soundtoys, Fabfilter, Plugin Alliance...)
