Interview with Jeff Thal

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Playing on 3 Bumblefoot albums. Great expressive freedom and lots of fun.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Funk tracks with monster bassist David Pastorius, nephew of the legendary Jaco. Doing a video series.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital. So many advantages in the modern recording world and crystal clear sound quality.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I will devote myself to playing as if the song were my own.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Being a part of creative projects.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: That I will do an epic 12 minute prog tune for the same price. lol

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: Tell me about the overall style of the song/project. Would you prefer me to lay back in the pocket, or fancy it up a bit? Do you know what you're looking for drum style wise? Or should I just do my thing?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: From past experiences, if you send a track played to a click, make sure you are locked in with the click!!! Very important.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: 1. Snare drum 2. Kick drum 3. Hi Hat 4. Sticks 5. PIZZA

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I'm a professional drummer for a living; this is all I do for a living..with gigs and teaching. Been playing since age 10, doing live remote drum sessions since 2009.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Rock/funk. Progressive when needed.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Don't over-saturate the effects! Use judgement and keep thinking about the outcome of the track.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: Usually I work on rock tunes in some way, because that's what people send me.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Judgement...knowing what's right for the song at hand. Solid groove and chops too, naturally.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: My intuition. I play off of the parts you send me, listening to accents, vocals, strumming patterns, etc. to fit cohesively into your song, as if we had played together for years. That's the goal, always!

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: Very simple process. Send me an mp3 of the track, preferably with a pronounced CLICK over the top. Several mp3's are fine. I load it in and track your session. ( I usually call with any questions, suggestions, direction, etc.) I send the blended mix back for your approval as an mp3. Once approved, you pay me via PayPal, Venmo, Facebook Messenger Pay, Zelle, or directly on my website. Once paid, I send you 10 raw, untouched mono wave files of the session for you to do as you wish, via WeTransfer.com I include a stereo mix of the drums with full effects as well, should you need or want it! Many do! That's it!

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: I track in a nice sounding, mid-sized live room. 5-piece pro kit, various brands of snares and cymbals to achieve the right sound depending on the project. All my mics are Sennheiser, AKG, Shure, Audio Technica. Audient pre-amps and interface. Clean and punchy. Studio One Professional DAW Coffee and food!

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: So many! Top drummmers like Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Carter Beauford...many more. Beside that, I'm inspired by my professional musician peers of any instrument, doing what I'm doing...we all help each other.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: Most of the time, I'm tracking live drums to straight-up rock tunes...sometimes pop rock, sometimes hard rock or metal, sometimes progressive rock. I do enjoy funk tunes! I've done country, pop, r&b as well. Always enjoy being a part of another musician's dream coming to fruition.
