Interview with Illuminox Music
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am especially proud of one of my latest productions, Castles by Jona Vark. I did the production for the instrumental as well as mixing, mastering and vocal production. I also am immensely proud of Bodies by Nicky Buell. I did the instrumental production, vocal mixing and overall track mixing. I think both of these songs and artists are absolutely incredible and I am beyond honored that I get to work with both of them. I love how they turned out and feel these best represent one of the sounds I am the best at.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working 13 different projects as we speak. They range from remixes, live edits for DJ mixing, full track production, vocal tuning, vocal time alignment, mixing and mastering and sample pack creation.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. We are so blessed to live in a timeline where the possibilities are truly endless, all from the convenient access of a computer.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise that I will deliver high quality results and if for some reason, you aren't happy with how things turn out, I offer plenty of revisions to ensure expectations are met. I always want to keep working on things until they meet what the client is looking for.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love nothing more than being able to be involved in so many diverse music projects. This has been my number one dream since I was a little kid.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What kind of plugins do you use the most? Serum 2 is a massive staple within my production, especially in EDM. I use Soothe 2 a lot for taming harsh frequencies. However, I am very proficient with stock Ableton plugins so I use those 95% of the time, as I find them to be quite powerful and versatile. Do you use AI in the music production? No, I do not use AI for anything relating to the work I do on here. All composition, editing, mixing, mastering, work, etc. is done within Ableton Live by me manually. Any 3rd party plugins I use are either synths or fx to aid in my workflow and are operated by myself organically.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that I just make music and sell it to people. In reality, I mostly help people finish their demos, mix their music, edit their vocals, bring their songs to the finish line. Even if I am creating a track fully from scratch, it's not like I just come up with every idea. In that case, I view it as me utilizing my skills as a producer to execute the vision of another artist who may lack the necessary time or skills to enact their musical endeavors.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: It depends. My most commonly asked questions usually include narrowing down their goals with whatever music project it is. I want to understand the full scope of the project to ensure I am the best fit.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Pick someone who best fits your needs as a customer. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, Focusrite interface, Audio technica ath-m50x headphones, Yamaha DTX6K5-M Electronic Drum Set, Audio technica at2035 microphone
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started producing music at 12 back in 2016 and it became a full time job in 2021. Every year since then, my business has grown in size as I have gained more experience and clients.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My own style is best described as energetic, electric, experimental, bombastic, and explosive. I can handle a wide variety of styles and soundscapes though. This is merely for stuff I create purely on my own.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Dylan Brady. His innovative sound and way of doing music has always intrigued me and held my attention. I also really admire how he is able to bring out the best in any artist he works with.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't be afraid to break the rules. If it sounds good, do it! Stop overthinking everything and just create art.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on electronic music. Specifically, house music/EDM and its countless subgenres. I have done lots of dance pop, dubstep, hyperpop/electro clash, indie electronic, trance, hardstyle, techno, etc.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My attention to detail is by far one of my strongest skills. If a client tells me something, I am going to write that down and make sure it happens.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a cavalcade of music inspirations and sounds from a wide palette of genres, styles and backgrounds. I grew up listening to rock, punk, emo and metal music and playing the drums for hours on end. This gives me a unique, rhythmically inclined edge to how I approach music production. I became obsessed with complex EDM sound design at 12 years old and devoted every ounce of free time I had to learning the techniques that would help me achieve the crazy sounds I was hearing. I have an exceptional ear for what sounds good after spending a decade doing music of all kinds.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I want to know first and foremost what the client needs. I will ask for musical inspirations, track references, and any specific details pertaining to the project at hand. I always put the client's needs first before anything else as I want to ensure I execute their proper vision. Once I have the necessary details, I will move into production. It typically will take me around 3-5 days, sometimes longer depending on the project. I will discuss this with the client and adjust for any specific deadlines so expectations are met.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a home office studio setup with Ableton Live 12 Suite running off a powerful laptop that handles any music production you could possibly throw at it. This way, I can work on the go whenever I might need to. I use a Focursite Scarlett 2i2 interface, Audio Technica ath-m50x headphones, Xfer Serum 2, Melodyne 5 assistant, Soothe 2, Waves tune, and CLA vocals most often, as well as being a big advocate of the stock Ableton plugins. I feel it is the chef, not the kitchen and I apply this concept to my every day workflow. I have the skillset and workflow necessary to make anything work. I often only use stock plugins and achieve next level results this way. I believe having the ear for good music, mixing skills and work ethic goes way beyond what any fancy new plugin could get you. This is the result of over a decade of experience producing music.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I take heavy inspiration from all different sides of music. I got into the EDM production world at age 12 and have been grinding music production nonstop ever since. I take heavy inspiration from people like Virtual Riot, Subtronics, Dylan Brady, Frost Children, A.G. Cook, Porter Robinson, Ninajirachi, Brakence, Jane Remover, Underscores, Skrillex, Tiffany Day, Pluko, Space Laces, as well as many other artists. I have also been an avid listener of all things rock, punk, emo, and metal since I was very young. I grew up playing drums so my initial inspirations came from drummers like Aaron Gillespie, Travis Barker, Donovan Melero, and Alex Rodriguez. I absolutely love bands like Saosin, Norma Jean, Underoath, Hail the Sun, The Devil Wears Prada, I See Stars, and Deftones.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I typically help different artists finish their demos. People come to me all the time with unfinished ideas that they want taken to that next professional, polished, release ready level. I am have a great ear for what sounds good and help people bring their ideas to life. I also do countless mixing and mastering projects as well as vocal tuning/timing/processing work. I have had great success with creating instrumentals from the ground up as well. I can handle just about any music production related project you can throw at me.
