Interview with Zack Adam McDade
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both have their Pros and Cons. Analogue has the warmth. Digital has the ease.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love working with new people and creating something great that we can both be proud of.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I don't just jam.. The parts need to be right. They need to be interesting, toneful and in the pocket.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Name a few guitar players you have in mind for this track..
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Let's talk! I love chatting about what someone wants to get out of their song. I'll listen to all of your suggestions and bring my experience to the table.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Gibson SG, VOX AC30, Tube Screamer, Volume Pedal and a Bottleneck.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Definitely blues based. It really depends on the guitar I'm playing. If I pick up my Telecaster then I'll lean towards more country bends and phrases but if I grab my SG then I focus a lot on riffs or crunchy lead tones.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with a producer that can layer guitars. Guys like Jimmy Iovene & Jeff Lynne have a great sense of layering all the right sounds to create a full sounding track with plenty of subtleties.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I'm comfortable working on all styles of music. I have much experience playing Jazz, Blues, Hard Rock, Reggae, Pop..
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: An amalgamation of all my influences brought into the modern music scene.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I'll listen to the song and take on board any requests or suggestions from the client. We can discuss what style or direction to go in and find a common ground we can both agree on. I'll try different guitars to find what tones fit perfectly on your track then I'll work on refining all the parts.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by producers like Jeff Lynne (Tom Petty, ELO, George Harrison), Roy Thomas Baker (The Cars), Glyn Johns (The Who, The Faces, Eric Clapton). These producers have their own unique ways of making a song stand out.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Ciara Moon
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'm happy to discuss any special requests you may have and I'm flexible with prices.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've played guitar for over 10 years now and have been on tour & in studios up and down the country honing my craft. I'm no stranger to being out of my comfort zone and getting the job done to a deadline.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Record guitar amps with an additional room mic for a more natural reverb effect instead of adding in post.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: All styles of guitar. I will throw myself into any genre and work to a deadline.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Vox AC30 1974 Dallas Model, Vox AC30C2 (modded reverb tank), Ibanez Tube Screamer, Volume Pedal, Behringer U-PHORIA, SM58, Condenser Mic
