I'm a Mixing Engineer based in Italy. I mostly mix records for upcoming artists helping them craft their sound.

Graduated in Audio Engineering at CPM Music Institute (Milan, Italy), I work with various artists as mix engineer or producer. I've been mixing and mastering for 4 years in my studio in Turin. I've also worked as ghost producer at Wave Life Studios for 2 years.

During my journey I've had the opportunity to witness the work of many talented people, each with a different background. This has been critical to develop my personal taste and my own method.

I like to see my work as a process of enhancement. I like the mix to sound clear, loud and punchy coherently with the genre. The most important thing of all is that the result sounds good on anything, from large systems to ear-buds.

Interview with Matteo Ferrarotto

Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will be true to your vision.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Many people ask me if mastering the track will solve certain problems in the mix. The answer is: it depends. My personal advice is to make the mix in such a way that the mastering engineer is left to do a general refinement of the tone and adaptation to the target medium of the single or album. Which is what mastering was meant to be!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I like the mix to sound clear, loud and punchy coherently with the genre. The most important thing of all is that the result sounds good on anything, from large systems to ear-buds.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I try to work on a wide range of genres. In past years, I've mostly been working on electronic/dance and pop music.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My current setup is designed to work entirely in the box, so that I can easily recall sessions and meet clients' delivery time requirements, which you know are tighter today than ever before. In the future I'd like to upgrade to a hybrid analog/digital system that allows me to integrate some outboard gear. My studio monitors are perhaps the most valuable thing I own. Handcrafted in Italy by a company called Rasch Audio, they are simply gorgeous, fast and detailed. Irreplaceable. I use my old pair of KRK Monitors that I bought when I was a kid as a second listening system.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I definitely appreciate professionals like Serban Ghenea and Max Martin. The quality of what they make is very high, just look at the latest albums of pop stars like Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars or The Weeknd.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both worlds offer advantages and disadvantages. A mentor has always told me to take what's good from both and elevate the quality of the result.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A mix engineer just can't solve any problem that comes inherent in the production.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would bring with me an Ampex ATR 102 Tape Machine, a Distressor, a Bricasti M7, a Sontec Mastering EQ and a good old pair of ATC Monitors.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Saturation is the most musical way to EQ a sound.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I improve the instruments' intelligibility, vocal clarity, overall depth, sound image and punch of the mix.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I simply take the demo and go from there. I like to see my work as a process of enhancement.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly get to mix records from up-and-coming artists or bands. As you can see in the list above, I am also available to do only editing work. Nowadays, it's increasingly common for artists on a budget to go to the same engineer for both mixing and mastering, which is why I offer a unique package that includes both services for a discounted fee.
